When checking in there were no staff around but all keys left on the front desk (anyone could’ve rocked up and let themselves into a room) with each name written on a card - seems like a data protection breech there. Managed to find my room which had obviously not been cleaned apart from the beds made. There were razor heads left in the shower, luckily I saw them before my daughter did, what I assume to be toothpaste all over the sink, stains on the bedding, clumps of dirt and dust all over the sides, empty coffee packets and bits of dirt all over the floor. I actually stood on a piece of glass which got stuck in my foot. ||I was told in the morning I could have a full English as they had gluten free ingredients to then be offered vegetarian sausages which were frozen in a packet with wheat clearly written in bold. I will say they had gluten free bread and I was able to have the breakfast without the sausages. ||The entire hotel stank of smoke and weed, definitely coming from the kitchen area. ||On checking out I informed the owner of the state of our room and he was apologetic and offered a small discount. Then proceeded to charge me extra as they had placed my daughter and myself in a larger room (which we hadn’t booked) by mistake but said I still had to pay the up charge as I stayed in there. How was I to know I was put in a larger room than booked and was going to be charged?||We were a large booking over two nights which included 5 rooms the first night, down to 3 for the 2nd night. They completely messed up the booking and caused complete chaos whilst we were trying to get ready for a family wedding, causing my sister, husband and 3 year old son to have to pack up their belongings and move to another room whilst getting ready. No apologies from staff, no consideration, staff walked in and out of the room whilst my sister was dressing, it was a complete shambles. ||The waiting staff in the restaurant both mornings were pleasant and a few members of my family ate there on the Friday night and said their food was nice (I didn’t so cannot comment) but their food was served nearly an hour after it should’ve been as the chef (owner) completely mucked up their food and said their fish was “black”. ||Wouldn’t recommend, much cheaper and nicer looking places available. Very dated, not clean, not a good experience at all.

The smell of cannabis throughout the day persisted, from when we checked in around 3pm to breakfast at 9am. I think the person smoking it must have been the one to glue bed slats to the ceiling of our bedroom - (I'm not the first to remark on this so no pictures required from me) and possibly the same person chose the floral wall paper. The room was tired, the bathroom poorly cleaned and evidence of limescale and mold in the sink and bath. The shower head was so clogged with limescale the spray was ineffectual for bathing. The bed was lumpy and the pillows thin and synthetic. We did not sleep well. I found a dirty napkin on the sidetable near the coffee and tea when we first arrived. Breakfast was served in a fairly old fashioned dining room with a buffet of over stewed fruits on offer amongst the usual basics. The breakfast menu is basic which is fine, but the full english was very meagre for the price. A tiny half burned sausage and some watery baked beans enveloped one fried egg, a weirdly disproportionate amount of mushrooms and one small rasher of bacon. There were newspapers in the lounge and a small bowl of quality streets which we devoured, still hungry after breakfast. The cook at breakfast was very sweet and seemed to be serving and cooking at the same time so was a bit pressed, he was the nicest thing about this horrible property. When we arrived back to this guest house around 10.30pm the night before we found the drive in complete darkness - not a pennt spent on lighting the path for visitors returning in the dark. There are brick pillars on the road with brass plates on, smartly inscribed with The Nyton giving one false hope that this is a decent place. For 110 pounds for one night for no luxury or attention to detail and a paltry breakfast, I can only imagine that any profits are going straight back into the owners pot. Flee for your life!

The only person we met was not hospitable its like she was barking orders out at us when we arrived. The place was grubby our room had no sink in the bathroom the sink was in the bedroom there was mould in the shower area luckily we were only there one night. The bed was comfy a couple of the locals told us not to eat there we will never go back. One review says it has 4 stars I don't know how

The impressive driveway approach and building itself belied what lay within. Reception area is dull and unwelcoming. The walk to the room (9) was accompanied by a musty smell akin to an old ashtray. We'd booked into a double room but were placed in a family room. The decor was 'interesting' - some might call it quaint or characterful, I'd call it unkempt and neglected. The towels, whilst very clean and white, were all damp and had to be dried on the heated towel rack (which thankfully worked). The pictures show ceiling stains, stained and damaged bed, skirting board damage, mould in the shower room along with a pull-down blind that was growing it's own life form. Carpets throughout were old, stained and looked as old as the house. And then there was breakfast; mushrooms awash in oil, tepid beans, one hard piece of bacon, a part-cooked sausage and a poached egg that did a fine impression of a hard-boiled egg. We'd booked in for two nights but left after one as felt the place was detrimental to our health. Simply awful establishment in every respect.

A wonderful place to stay. Great location (quiet but just a few minutes walk from the cathedral), a spacious and comfortable room (great decor and the most comfortable bed ever), a very good breakfast and most importantly, friendly and welcoming staff and owner. Highly recommended.

Booked 2 nights - stayed one. Booked family room given a very small double with a bathroom the size of a cupboard. Arrived in the evening so did not see anyone on reception - keys to room on desk. The staff (1) very grumpy (think Basis Fawlty) when I complained no other room available (except at the top of the building) which he claimed was inferior to the one we were given. Breakfast good however and waitress very nice. Decor needs seriously updating. We visit Ely regularly but will never return to the Nyton.

The smell when you first walk in was appalling.. smelt like an ash tray. The room looked like it’s not been cleaned apart from fresh bedding. Smoke ash on the window sill. Stains on wooden work tops. Thick dust in heater. Oh and an unknown tablet found by a crawling toddler! Not happy at all. Such a shame but the building is lovely just needs a lot of TLC. Would not be coming again in the future.

Just save yourself the hassle and book to stay in the travelodge. The place stinks of weed and the staff are just high as a kite. Toiletries were taken from my room, to which then magically appeared back after challenging the staff. You could tell it had clearly been used with dirty white gunk all over it. Please please stay away for your own well being.
