Booked a room at the Gables at very short notice to attend a funeral at nearby Easington. The hotel is small but is very welcoming. The owner and his wife go out of their way to make you feel welcome. My room was en suite it was rather dated as was the bathroom but it was very clean with a comfy bed. The bar was rather small and was busy with regulars from the village but you were made to feel welcome, never saw much of the locality but it is rather quaint. When grading hotels I think it important to remember how much you are paying and on that basis I would rate the place highly as the cost was more than reasonable. Would stay again if in the area.

Stayed here Saturday 22nd April 2017 for one night to go and see our friends play in a band 5 miles from this little hotel. Thank you John for your very pleasant hospitality and jokes. Dog friendly and walks right next to the hotel also. Great to get to Durham city as only five miles away. Good breakfast, would say if you want modern go to the city. This is good old fashioned country feeling place and suited us just fine. Thank you once again to you both.

So it is small and throbs with the atmosphere of a grandparental home, but that brought a sense of comfortableness that made it a nice stay. Chatting in the bar with the very amiable owner and locals was most pleasant. The room was small and decorated florally, but comfortable. I had an en suite shower room. Breakfast was very god indeed and the visit was most reasonably priced.

Loved our stay at the Gables in Haswell. John and his cute wife were a delight and John has a seemingly unending and entertaining series of poems to quote. What a gem! The rooms were not great, but certainly adequate and well appointed. If you are looking for fancy this is not your place. If you are looking for a nice and pleasant place to spend and night or two and to meet wonderful people, the Gables Hotel is a fine choice. Great breakfast!

We stayed at The Gables Hotel for one night while visiting relatives in Durham, purely because it was the only place available that accepted dogs. It is easy to find, in a small village a few miles from the city. Our room was cold and outdated, the ensuite had a sloping, badly laid laminate floor with gaps between the planks, dead flies in the light fitting and no wash basin, that was in the opposite corner of the bedroom.||Breakfast was a nice full English and the hosts were pleasant enough. There is a large and convenient car park to the rear.

I stayed on a Saturday night for one night only. The owner was very welcoming and told me everything I needed to know prior to showing me up to my room.||||The room was quite small for a double but, like I say, I didn't mind for one night. It was quite dated, almost like walking into the 1970s, but functional.||||The hotel has a restaurant and bar which provide different food options. However, I was quite disappointed to be told that it would be preferable if I ordered from the bar menu as it would be "easier for my wife".||||The food I did have was very nice and clearly home cooked. It came in large portions and was certainly worth the price.||||The bar is, like the rest of the property, quite dated and full of trinkets and family photos. It was almost like sitting in my grandmas living room!||||The staff are very friendly and very helpful, they cannot be faulted.||||The breakfast was also really good.

Clean, tidy, nicely decorated, good breakfast, friendly staff and all at a reasonable price. We arrived too late to get anything to eat, but the owner phoned a takeaway for us and set a table in the dining room. Some good chat with the owner, locals and other residents. A very nice and friendly feel to this place.

We stayed here ahead of an open day visit to Durham University.||John welcomed us with great warm hospitality which carried on through our very short stay. They were very flexible with our needs for breakfast timings the following morning and delivered a fabulous full English breakfast for me and my fiancΓ© and were able to tend to her daughters vegetarian needs for breakfast.||The rooms are functional and comfortable, but if you are looking for snazzy and jazzy, this is not the place for you. English charm and hospitality is what is on offer here and for that the place is faultless.||We had spent 9 or so hours getting to Durham, and whilst they were not able to offer food to us after our long journey, they directed us to a fabulous Indian restaurant a short walk away which was a welcome relief and very much needed after our long journey.
