My wife and I stayed at Broom Farm overnight en route to Scotland. This is a fine old house and was once the most important house in the village. It is in a quiet location with ample parking yet only a short drive into Durham for some sightseeing. Elizabeth gave us a warm welcome and useful advice about the area. Our room was very comfortably furnished in period style. Breakfast was splendid.

We stayed here because it was half way between a birthday venue in Consett and the Beamish Museum. The owner is very welcoming but the house is very dated. The small patterned wallpaper and purple- lined curtains (the patterned side was oddly facing the outside) and bed covers made our room rather gloomy. Although the bed was comfortable (the bedding was a sheet, blanket and quilt) and the breakfast good, it was too much like staying in a cross between a museum dedicated to the 1950s and a charity shop to be entirely enjoyable.

We had a very comfortable stay for two nights and the breakfasts we got were excellent and cooked exactly as we asked. There is a bus stop almost right outside the property which was very handy so there was no need to take the car into the city. Our room was slightly dated but this is not intended as a criticism and although our room was at the front of the building quite near to the road we were not disturbed by any traffic noise and we enjoyed a good nights' sleep. We would be more than happy to stay again.

A lovely family feel house, with a really lovely breakfast. The room we stayed in could do with some updating - the carpet was tread bare in places and the wall paper was hanging off the wall in the bathroom. My daughters room had a separate toilet where she had to go a little way along the hall to get to it. It was all a bit dated!

This superb farmhouse near Ross on wye not far from the lovely wye river where you can hire a canoe for a gentle paddle to riverside pubs or walk through the farms cider orchard to the Yew Tree pub, good food beer and wonderful local cider. The rooms are very nice and there is the cider suite for a special treat. The best breakfast for miles and some great hospitality in a wonderful setting.

Best cooked breakfast ever. I still don't know how they manage to make these perfect fried eggs.||We were visiting Durham to view some properties as we were planning on moving here. The owners are really nice and we got some nice comments on the properties during breakfast + tips on cycling in Durham etc. It was really nice.||We can definitely recommend this place

My partner and I stopped by for a cider tour, email ahead to book a tour, and Mike was lovely! He really knows his stuff and made us feel very welcome and at home, we had a walk around the orchard and learned a lot. Looking forward to stopping again.

Stayed two nights while visiting Durham. Lovely warm welcome, including badly needed help to find where to park !||||Room very comfortable, in a traditional style, slept like a log both nights.||||Full English breakfast very good, three kinds of homemade jam including a sublime rhubarb and ginger.||||The walk into Durham takes about 35 minutes, or there's a bus from right outside the door that takes 7 minutes into the city centre.||||Only slight criticism was no wi-fi, but there are a couple of BT hotspots (just) within range.
