Thornbury Castle Hotel & Restaurant - Bristol

If you love history, you'll love Thornbury Castle. It's the only place in England where you can stay at a real Tudor castle where actual kings and queens have slept. I was fortunate enough to stay in the Henry VIIIth's Suite, where he (and most likely Anne Boleyn) slept in August 1535. What a rush for a history geek like myself. ||||The castle is also steeped in ancillary Tudor history, as it was being built by Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. His daughter-in-law, Ursula Pole, had a royal linage as well. ||||The service was 4-star all the way. The receptionists were exceptional: happy and knowledgable. Josie in particular went above-and-beyond to ensure my stay exceeded my expectations. ||||Dinner was delicious and elegantly presented, and the breakfast menu had a nice variety of meat and vegetarian selections. A few more wines by the glass would be good, but that's just a minor recommendation.||||I was delighted by the weather, which allowed me to wander around the gardens and imagine what it looked like 500 years ago.||||I highly recommend Thornbury Castle. It's a short Uber away from the Bristol Parkway train station and well worth the visit!

Lovely historic building and beautifully kept. The gardens are a delight. I was meeting family for a casual lunch the location was ideal. We were given a table in the Library as I had my 2 little dogs with me. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The burgers my son and his fiancee had were enormous and delicious. However, I had the soup, 8 spoonfuls with 3 pieces of bread! The soup was delicious but I felt the serving was disappointing, even for a starter!

Enjoyed our visit very much, would consider staying in the future.

My boyfriend and I (Americans) were recently in the UK and stayed at Thornbury for a few days as a part of our trip. In short, this was the most luxurious, beautiful stay we have ever had anywhere. We stayed in one of the premium suites (Mary Queen of Scotts), which was HUGE with a gorgeous four-poster bed and stunning bathroom with a large soaking tub and rain-shower walk-in shower, toilet, and bidet. The room was incredibly comfortable and had all the comforts of home. Housekeeping was fantastic and the nightly bed turn-down service while we were at dinner was marvelous. As a historian, knowing the history of the castle just made me giddy! It's so cool to be able to stay in a home that has been around for so long....I mean who gets to stay in a castle in their lifetime?! The food was on another level! Dinner each night was fantastic and met with the Michelin star expectations. Breakfast, which is menu order, but included, was also super fresh and delicious. I could go on and on about the food. The staff in the entire establishment was simply fantastic, always had a smile, and was so helpful! If we were rich, we would have stayed longer. I hope that one day we might return. If you are on the fence about booking this.....splurge a little and enjoy life!

How can you improve on perfection! Our stay exceeded expectations! Already looking forward to making a return visit. The whole place was amazing and we enjoyed a delightful relaxing evening in the main lounge after a wonderful dinner in the restaurant. Our room “Mary Queen of Scott’s” was magnificent with a fabulous four poster bed and lavishly furnished, so good it seemed a shame leaving it for dinner etc.

Luxury, taste, style, oh so hard to choose proper words for the experience we had at the Thornbury!! From having tea, breakfast to most delicious dinners (very Michelin worthy!!!!!) So our restaurant experience is absolutely outstanding, every. Single. Dish was so scrumptious, beautifuly organized and described by waiters!!! The staff trained very very impressively, in the restaurant and the hotel!!! Superb service!!! |Now, the we took advantage of an upgrade to second teir rooms, and its undescribable!!! The cleaningness, the design, the character, the modern luxurious add-in, wow!! We had heated floor, heating towel rack, a bidet, oh the towels a d wardrobes are of an excellent quality, the room had everything we could have wanted abd more!!! Luxury and style of it all!!! Cannot wait to come back!!!|We also loved spending time in common room while having drinks or tea, loved loved loved!!!

This stay left us speechless. It is a stunning historic property with fabulous accommodations. Every detail was perfect and we felt like we were in a different time, but with luxurious modern comforts. The breakfast was exceptionally good with amazing French press coffee, I loved the vegetarian version of the traditional British breakfast. My teenagers played on a wood chess board while we enjoyed a cocktail in the parlor in the evening. The gardens are beautiful with photo opportunities at every turn. We stayed after a day visiting the Roman baths, I initially hesitated to book due to the cost and drive from Bath, but am so glad I did it. This was an unforgettable, once in a lifetime experience for my family. If you are on the fence, just book it.

Just got back from a stay at Thornbury Castle and it was honestly one of my best mini-holidays ever! Me and my partner needed a little break and wow, what a find this place was!

We stayed in Prince Arthur's room and it couldn't have been more beautiful or comfortable. The quiet is just amazing - such a peaceful escape. And the bathroom was absolutely massive!

We loved every minute of our stay and have already recommended it to all our friends. Truly special place for a getaway 🧡
