Ahhhh The Fat Badger...... ||If you want the quick short version of this review STOP, head to booking.com and get booked in.||You would not be disappointed with staying here!||Now, for the people in for the long version, grab your tea and get ready...||It all started with my wife wanting to experience a ghost tour, and as I'm a good husband with size 9 shoes I went to work. I researched and planned for months getting everything right. I booked The Fat Badger purely for it's quirky appearance and style and it's location. ||Top tip, I parked in Marygate long stay carpark. Quite close by and easy to access.||Now back to it, ||Everything about this place screams quirky, the creeky stairs, the walls, the colours. We had the room directly above the front door and if I'm honest it's the best room by far.||It has its own quirky little hallway with thin twisted walls taking you to your private bathroom, tall ceilings and to be fair a really comfortable bed.||Plenty of space with tea making facilities and a TV.||If you manage to find time, get yourself out in the beer garden it really is worth it. ||We spent 3 days in York and this superb place served well as a base for us to enjoy the hustle and bustle of York with easy access to everything we wanted to do and places we wanted to see. Not to mention you are practically nextdoor to York Minster.||The food and drinks menu is not to shabby and fairly priced and although we didn't eat here that's purely because we were out at other places during our stay. However, I did have a pint in the garden.||This trip was to surprise my wife for our first wedding anniversary and it certainly didn't disappoint.||I hope whoever reads this feels encouraged enough to venture out there, York is a fantastic place to visit and The Fat Badger will serve you well in creating the mood, setting and atmosphere for a marvellous trip.

We booked in advance , booking online very easy to do.
The table was nicely located, the staff were pleasant and welcoming.
The vegan roast was tasty and plenty to eat. Great Yorkshire puddings. And a good cuppa to round things off. Not too pricey either.

Lovely little pub! Had the most lovely burgers! Great beer selection & friendly staff. Garden is a nice little sun trap. Great to see a busy pub with really nice food. We visited 3 times on our two day trip🤣 Will definitely return when next in York

Visited a couple of weeks ago on a lovely sunny day. It was nice to sit in the beer garden and when in the shade they had heaters to take off the chill. Great view of York Minster and basic menu, but the burgers were nice and all 5 of us enjoyed our meals. Reasonable prices also. We would definitely come back 😊

I have visited the Fat Badger many times but this was the first time we had Sunday lunch here and it was exceptional. A seriously hefty portion of the most tender roast beef, giant Yorkshire pudding, flavoursome seasonal vegetables and delicious crispy topped, cauliflower cheese, all absolutely delicious. Extra gravy and vegetables were offered (we took them up on the gravy) and I washed it down with an excellent Argentinian Malbec.|The staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing and the atmosphere was very chilled. Even the playlist in the background was perfect.|A very pleasant way to spend a Sunday. We'll be back.

I loved my stay here! I was made to feel welcome as soon as I stepped through the door: it felt as if I was staying with friends. My first floor room was quirky, with the bathroom down a little narrow corridor, but it was clean, pretty and very comfortable. It overlooked the street, and so there was a bit of noise if the window was open, but with the window closed and the thick, heavy curtains drawn, I had a lovely peaceful night. I didn't dine at the hotel, but my breakfast poached eggs were perfectly cooked and the service again was friendly.
There is no parking at the hotel (which was very clearly stated when I booked), but there is a public car park just a few minutes' walk away, and this is a perfect base for exploring the old, narrow streets of York. I will definitely stay here again!

We visited the fat badger on a lovely Monday evening, as a celebration for Spring finally returning! We sat in the garden towards the back (which had a lovely atmosphere) and as it got colder we used the handy heat lamp things. Such a clever idea! Food and drinks were served relatively quickly, the drink prices were about the average for a pub in York, but the food is on the expensive side of things!

Our group of 8 shared a meal in the snug. The menu is simple, with decent variation but some of the party found a little restrictive. I had the tomahawk pork chop which was cooked well and tasty with a fantastic sauce but was perhaps a little small. Added a side of chips which solved that, but would also have liked a side of veg, as side options were limited to chips or salad. Others in the party had the fish and chips which was a decently large portion, with the fish being fresh and flaky. Drinks were ok with a good selection of spirits, beers and non alcoholic options. One did report the cider was a little flat, but that didn't detract from the meal.
