I had booked a non-refundable stay at but unfortunately had to cancel my trip due to a sudden visa refusal. I contacted the hotel, not expecting much — but to my surprise, their team kindly accepted my cancellation and showed genuine understanding of my situation.

Even though I never made it to the hotel, this small act of compassion and professionalism truly impressed me. If this is how they treat guests before arrival, I can only imagine how warm and welcoming the actual stay would be.

Had a lovely stay on Saturday. Beautiful 4 poster bed. Comfortable and huge. Found the room to be relatively quiet, which is exactly what we wanted.
Breakfast was plentiful, but eggs and bacon were slightly overdone to our taste.
The only criticism I can give is that there were a large group of guests that had been to a wedding the previous day, and they were exceptionally noisy at breakfast. So much so that we ended up walking out before finishing our meal. Might have been more acceptable if the staff had asked them to keep it down a bit.

What a lovely experience staying at The Rose & Crown in Colchester! The hotel is set in a gorgeous 600-year-old building, full of character and original features like timber beams. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful throughout my stay. I really enjoyed the breakfast—especially the gluten-free choices, which were much appreciated. My room was quiet, clean, and very comfortable. It’s a perfect spot for anyone who enjoys a bit of history combined with great hospitality. Would definitely stay again!

This hotel suited me well for a midweek overnight stay with work, with some minor gripes. I found the room a little too warm and the pillows slightly uncomfortable. But the staff were friendly and efficient, the room was clean and comfortable (I suspect it had recently been refurbished), the parking was free and on-site, and the location was good, being a reasonably short walk to the town centre with pleasant pubs and places to eat. I was surprised, with the hotel location, that road noise wasn't an issue, and found the hotel overall full of character and charm.

When I booked, I was not aware an annex existed. I had room 237 in this separate modern building, on the first floor. The room felt airless. Other reviews mentioned air conditioning but I found no evidence of this existing aside from a ceiling vent. Opening the windows for fresh air allowed in the noise from two streets. This continued, from traffic and pedestrians, right through the night. Powerful flood lights for car park security shone directly into the room from two sides if the curtains were not tightly closed. Possible the most disturbed night I have spent in any hotel. The shower controls were a test of intelligence combined with sheer luck.|On the plus side, the main building is beautifully preserved, the breakfast room is superb as was the full English breakfast. Service and check in/out were was friendly and efficient.

Booked for a two night stay April 2025. Greeted by a very friendly knowledgeable and enthusiastic person at reception. I'm assuming the manager or owner. Great first nights sleep. Not so great due to the disco/dance music from the wedding party situated beneath our room. Perfectly understandable, it's a wedding and everyone wants to have a great time. Not so great if you need to go to bed early.|Hotel itself is 700 years old and full of quirky and original features. Obviously, to retain these features something has to give and therefore don't expect 21st century standards of perfection. All the staff we had dealings with were very good at their jobs and attentive. Breakfast is freshly cooked to order so a slight delay which you are informed of, but very good quality.||To sum up would we return? Probably not due to the sleep issue but you could always ring in advance of booking and ask if they have an event on during your stay .

I absolutely loved my stay at the Best Western The Rose & Crown Hotel in Colchester! This 600-year-old building is full of character and charm, with lovely timber beams and a cosy atmosphere. The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming, making me feel right at home. The breakfast was excellent — especially appreciated the gluten-free options! The room was comfortable and had everything I needed for a relaxing stay. Highly recommend if you’re into history, great service, and a unique experience!
