Am amazing hidden gem of a pub. From its stone floors, to the ambience, to the location and scenes, it's everything a village pub used to be. Only popped in for a swift drink, but what a beautiful place.

Recommend the fell walker pale ale.
My partner added, the locks in the ladies toilets don't all work and need attention.

Popped in before getting the train home after a day walking in the local area. Good range of well kept ales on as usual, with friendly service. Got the children a couple of kids meals which were served reasonably quickly, nice portion size and not too expensive. Outdoor seating area to the front of the pub with the sound of the stream in the background. A locals pub that is friendly and welcoming to visitors - we'll be back!

We decided to book here for the Cartmel races and we are glad we did. The Engine is a beautiful old traditional English pub, sat outside next to the river is very tranquil. Good selection of wines and beers are on offer and the bar area is very cosy.
We stayed for one night, our room was a good size and a decent size bed.
Our host was exceptional, he really helped us out when we got stuck getting back at night, so with this above and beyond service I rate the Engine 5 stars..
We would definitely stay here again.
Great experience...Jon and Jeanette.

This is the worst public house I have ever visited, difficult to believe it is still open. It smells horrible , it is freezing ,and it is dirty, should be shut down. Please do not go there to stay or eat .The staff appear unkempt and rude . Such a shame because as the only pub in the village it does negatively impact on the character of the village.

We had the most beautiful family holiday cottage in 'Folds End' which is very close to the Engine Inn. We headed there on our first night, there was a band playing, and although it was not too busy we enjoyed the evening playing pool and watching the football. A seemingly good start to the weeks holiday. The older barman was helpful and chatty but it became evident that despite advertising meals, actually serving them was not something they wanted to do, they appeared to operate a 'when we can be bothered' policy. I had to return my glass each time I wanted another drink as it saved using a clean one! It was never busy so we returned for dinner on Sunday. Despite a few people dining, we were told they had stopped serving food. This was before 6.30pm. There is nowhere else to eat locally so we had a few packets of scampi fries for tea! We did, however, go in each evening for a drink, as it was the only pub in Cark, but the service and attitude of the young staff member on our last night was awful. So much so that the two other people in the entire pub were even embarrased! We ordered a drink and asked for the pool cues. He asked for a ÂŖ5 deposit! There was no one else in the pub and we had been in every night for a week with the kids, he knew us, so it wasn't as if we were a massive risk!. We actually didn't have cash but he refused to let us play without paying the deposit, I asked where the nearest cash machine was as we all wanted to enjoy our last night with a few games of pool. His response was 'nah, there are no cash machines around here, but you can leave your bank card behind the bar' ! Ridiculous, but I had little option, so I gave him the card. At the end of the night we decided on a last round and one last game. My husband ordered a round and asked if he could have a couple of 50p coins. He said 'nah, sorry, I need all the change in the till'. He had earlier made the point that the Engine Inn is a local pub where people don't normally come to watch the football! It was a real shame that the holiday ended being made to feel that a drink and a bit of familiy time in the Engine Inn is something that is not welcomed by the staff. Sadly, we could not recommend it unless you want to feel that you are a burden to the staff. We would recommend packet scampi fries as these are fortunately available after 6pm! and would also suggest a visit to Cartmel instead, which would provide a warmer welcome and great food and drink.

We stopped on our way back from the steam railway for some food thinking it's a nice little village with a cosy pub, can't go wrong. Well you can & we were! We did notice that nobody else was eating but we were hungry & it was convenient. DO NOT EAT HERE! We should of sent it straight back & I'm surprised they have the cheek to serve it. Clearly a 2 pies for ÂŖ2.50 job & if you're gonna serve a ready meal lasagna at least pick a decent one & don't cook it on a radiator. ÂŖ27.50 for about ÂŖ5 worth of food, disgraceful. Hope you choke on it & if this review stops other people being ripped off then great
