If you're looking for the most peaceful and serene surroundings whilst staying in the most thoughtful and relaxing hotel then just book now. Cavens is a haven, with the most dedicated and kind owner, Angus, treating you like royalty. Having been round the world I've never stayed in such a place that brings a true "home from home" feeling and pure calmness.||We were welcomed at the door by Angus even before we got out the car and once taken to our beautiful large double room, with own sunroom overlooking the garden and grounds, were treated with tea and cake on the lawn. We spent a good hour there not really wanting to move given the tranquillity of the surroundings, teaming with birdlife, red squirrels, deer and the like. Move we must as dinner is always included.||We were overwhelmed with the choice of pre-dinner drinks from the bar, expertly made by Angus' long-term assistant, Katie. Whilst seated in the lounge, adorned with paintings and books and memorabilia collected over the years, we were offered the menu for the evening: Asparagus with Poached Egg and Rib-eye with veg, all cooked by Angus. It was a treat, perfectly cooked medium-rare, and more than ample portions. The homemade raspberry sorbet accompanying the chocolate cake was world class. I've never tasted anything so sublime. I suggested he should sell it!||We retreated to the fire place for a whisky nightcap thereafter before heading to the most comfortable sleep, awaking to a glorious day having coffee in the sunroom before breakfast.||And breakfast was no less impressive than dinner the night before. Another triumph accomplished with local granola, blueberries and yoghurt, followed by a full Scottish with more wonderful raspberry flavours in the jam to accompany the toast, coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice.||We should have booked longer than a night but we’ll be back, of that I have no doubt. It was a privilege to stay in such a wonderfully warmly inviting house, and will always cherish meeting Angus and the way we were looked after. In this weary old world, everyone needs to experience just what it's like to enjoy the peace that Cavens brings.||We wish nothing but success and happiness for Angus, and we'll see you soon again. In fact, we'll book for our anniversary now!

What a relaxing and peaceful weekend in this comfortable stylish country hotel set in a beautiful garden. The only noise was from the birds, balm for city-dwellers like us. We tucked into great dinners (including venison, smoked salmon risotto), which were only rivalled by splendid breakfasts featuring Loch Arthur granola and locally-produced sausages and black pudding. We were welcomed with afternoon tea and cake on arrival, enjoyed by a blazing log fire. Our bedroom boasted a separate sitting area overlooking the garden.

I hadn’t realised just how much I needed the peace and calm until I stayed at Cavens.||A house with its own story but given a new life by its current owner Angus. There are very few places where I could honestly say it’s comforting, but Cavens is one.||||Upgraded very nicely to the Oswald suite, I sat in my sunlit ( yes, specially requested šŸ˜‰) terrace and just enjoyed the view, lush greenery, massive storybook trees, distant firth.||And the bedroom was pretty good too!||||The ethos of Cavens is ā€œWelcome to my homeā€.||Before dinner drinks beside the log fire; a generous hand pouring from a tasteful selection of spirits, a very interesting wine list, and people who want to make sure you’re comfortable.||Dinner prepared from as much local produce as possible, I would say simply done, but to be that ā€œsimpleā€ and be that good takes skill and care.||If you’re looking for perfection with all the modern trimmings, spa, noise, Muzak, all the IT you think you need, then go elsewhere.||It is definitely a return to values we seem to be missing, temps perdus…..but happily found!||Put it this way, if you want to stand looking down to the trees after breakfast, watching red squirrels and pheasants, this is where to be.||||Situated in Kirkbean, Cavens is more than ideally placed to explore the beautiful South West corner of Scotland.||Choices of undiscovered beaches (no names, discover for yourself!); picturesque old churches, (Kirk’s to those with the patois,) such as Southwick; harbours with amazing yachts, catamarans, colourful dinghies and welcoming pub at Kipford; walk through to upmarket Rockcliffe, but check the way and tides before you go!|| New Abbey with it’s atmospheric avenue of trees as you drive in, and romantic Sweetheart Abbey where Devorgilla declared her love for the following centuries.||You’re in Queen of the South territory, Dumfries. An auld brig with links to the romantic Devorgilla, a camera obscura at the top of the hill with unbelievable views….in good weather! Of course, for Rabbie aficionados, Burns that is, there’s house, mausoleum, the hole in the wa’ pub.||If you’re interested in local, historic festivals, check out Dumfries’ Guid Nychburris in June. It’s all about being a Good Neighbour, with a queen, her champion the Cornet, the King’s representative the Pursuivant, and so many horses the Texans are jealous! Find out what stobbing and nogging means!||||You know what? Just go. Stay at Cavens, get spoiled in the nicest possible way, and find one of Scotland’s beautiful secrets.
