Although it is a bit of a walk from Balham station that is the only negative. This is a well-priced, comfortable and relaxing place to stay in South-East London which is a desert of simple, inexpensive lodgings. The room was beautifully decorated and had everything required - including free wifi - and the people at reception were just lovely. There was a great Italian "cafe and reading room" only three blocks away for breakfast and a wide choice of places to eat in the evening, on Balham High Street.

A wonderful lodge in so many ways: clean rooms, welcoming staff, good location in Balham, right next to Tooting common, and all at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend Balham lodge to you. Rooms go quickly so you need to book in advance. 5 stars.

I was so hopeful when I arrived, the outside and reception areas were clean and pleasant; the location was perfect for visiting my son, who lives in Balham. Then I was told I was on the 4th floor and had to struggle up with luggage - no help offered even when I explained I had a back issue. The room seemed clean at first - but there were a lot of suspicious looking stains on paint work and dirt/dust around bed frame. The obvious areas were clean and the bathroom was spotless but it felt grubby around the edges. Unfortunately the room was like an oven and the sash window would not open; however there was a fan thank God. After a day’s travelling I was disappointed there was no hot water for a shower and the TV worked but there was no sound, I really wanted to watch the football so that was annoying. The pillows were dreadful! In the end I had to roll up a sweatshirt and try to sleep on that. The thing that really stole my comfort was this weird cupboard right by my head on the bed, it could be opened into the room and was a huge spooky boiler room place; like something from Nightmare on Elm Street! I couldn’t sleep a wink! Worst stay I have ever had - mostly due to my own stupid imagination I am sure. Just as I was about to nod off I would imagine it opening behind me… and startle awake, heart thumping! When I am with my husband I will most likely give the hotel a second chance - it’s so perfectly located for us - and if I’d not been on my own it perhaps wouldn’t have scared me. But I will take my own pillow!

Woken up early morning by traffic noise the thin blinds do not help keep out the cold or noise. My room was on the 4th floor as this is in a residential area there is no lift. One teabag supplied each day plus coffee sachets sugar & milk. No need to change towels daily or service rooms every single day. Bus stop right outside takes you into balham or is is a 15min walk. Alot of slamming of doors which is quite unnecessary. Reception by the main door feels like as a guest I am been monitored.

We booked a ground floor room mainly because my 94 y/o mother struggles with stairs. We were allocated a first floor room. I complained to the inadequate man in charge on our arrival but he offered no solution to the problem. The shower was tiny and on our departure he wanted to charge us £10 car parking fee which was not due. I have emailed proof that I was booking a ground floor family room but the hotel made no attempt to rectify the situation. Instead of a pleasant weekend stay it turned out to be a nightmare

Balham Lodge is in a perfect location. Balham is lively and fun with lots of restaurants and easy access to public transit to get anywhere. The staff are warm and welcoming. The rooms are smaller than most US hotel rooms though there are two public spaces if you want to spread out a bit. We enjoyed staying here and highly recommend it.

Small shower very difficult for larger people. Mattress very old and uncomfortable. Cleanliness, staff, and location were great. 10 minute walk to train or catch bus outside of door. No longer serves breakfast Laundry service on site was useful. Enjoyed our stay.
