Pros:
Great location, being close to train station and bus station and central Durham. Good food and service - enjoyed Sunday lunch. Beef was cooked to perfection, in my opinion. Didn't have to book in advance. We were able to walk in and get a table straight away, but probably because it was later in the afternoon, after the initial lunch rush. Was still busy enough though. Prices are not too bad given location. Nice relaxed atmosphere and mix of people. Good for a chilled drink.

Cons:
Decor really needs some tlc. Looking tired and a bit scruffy. Stained upholstery on some of the bucket chairs, chipped paint work, grubby carpets, especially on the steps to main dining area. Toilets - tape all over the floor, NO toilet roll. (Yuck. Nothing worse.) Just a lick of fresh paint and a good steam clean of upholstery and carpet would help.

The location of this hotel is excellent if arriving by train, being located right opposite the station approach, great if you’re arriving by train and only a short walk from the centre of Durham. The hotel were happy to store our bags free of charge after check-out until our train later in the day, a really useful facility and a good saving compared to other luggage storage locations. All the staff were very friendly, chatty, welcoming and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. Room at the back was quiet with little road noise or noise from the bar and trains on viaduct above were not noticeable. Only negative was that some of the carpets etc were a bit worn, but still functional and slight noise from the extractor at the next door pizza takeaway.

Overall a nice stay and it is clear the staff try their hardest to ensure customers have a good stay.

Booked due to proximity to station and the city so it is ideally located. Was left with the choice of a twin or family room. Only two of us so chose the twin. On arrival after a wait at the bar we paid for the room prior to seeing it and were then shown up a very steep and grubby staircase to the room by a charming young lady. We were only shown to the door and went in on our own. Spacious room with en-suite. Upon entering the en-suite we were immediately struck by the amount of black mould around the sealant of the shower, holes in the back panel of the shower and shower doors hanging off their runners making it impossible to close properly. We mentioned this when we went downstairs to the lovely staff but nothing was done. The rest of the room was tired and grubby, dust on high surfaces (the vent in the bathroom was thick with dust) flaking paint, a tv aerial sellotaped to the window the frame of which was filthy. The curtain was thick and of good quality but the pelmet was stained. The beds squeaked. At 0125 we were awakened by noise outside which died down after 0300 so we got some sleep. Due to having had sn enjoyable evening out in the city I was quite prepared for this review to be saved by breakfast. That did not happen. Breakfast was self service yoghurt, a few mini boxes of cereal and some sunblest bread in its’ polythene bag with which to make toast. No butter, some jams from cash and carry and an urn with which to make poverty grade tea or instant coffee. All this for £110.00. Having run a B&B we know what standards should be and this was immeasurably poor value. I suppose the proximity to everything sells it but all I can do is advise against being swayed by convenience, treat yourself to a clean room and a good nights sleep and book a Travel Lodge. It’s a great pity as the staff are nice, location is brilliant and it could be so good instead of so bad with just a little application of effort and reasonable standards. And some working power points in the room would be useful.

Greeted with a warm welcome, the friendly staff are on hand to look after you, with cask beers and the regulars on pump there's something for everyone.

The food is served fresh and piping hot, I had the steak and ale pie with fresh veg and chips. So full I Daren't have the cheesecake for dessert which looked amazing.
