The room I stayed in had no heater in the bathroom and it was -2°c outside so it was very cold, there was no shower and not enough hot water to fill the very narrow bath.
Breakfast was in a cupboard in the room and I had to make myself.
The host was friendly and helpful .
For 85 pounds I would expect more

We found the hotel to be charming, and matched only by the friendliness and professional service of our host and proprietor, Nelio! From the moment we arrived, he put us at ease, and made us feel most welcome. He offered us a fantastic insight into both the hotel, his and his family’s personal journey as proprietors, as well as Stamford and the surrounding area as a whole. |The room was pleasant, clean and perfectly suited to our needs. There was fresh tea and coffee available, as well as breakfast items (breakfast was included) which were topped up daily. |The en-suite bathroom had an excellent shower, and tv was also provided (though not in the bathroom of course!)|We booked into Nelio’s candlelit restaurant for the second and final evening of our stay, and had an amazing experience!|Before going down to the restaurant (which is in the former cellar) we had pre-dinner drinks at the bar, and were delighted to make conversation with Nelio, his lovely Father (who was over for a visit) and fellow guests and diners, all of whom were very pleasant. |The restaurant lends itself to a charming and unique atmosphere, is beautifully presented, and the food was divine! Our waiter was also charming, professional, and polite, and again nothing was too much trouble. |We can thoroughly recommend a stay here at Candlesticks, in the beautiful town of Stamford, and we will most definitely be back again soon! |Heartfelt thanks to Nelio and his team, and keep up the fantastic work! ||Julian & Veronika

Absolutely terrific stay at Candlesticks. It is our third visit and had to be the best place to sty in Stamford. There are no frills just a charming atmospheric restaurant with a great & friendly host Nelio who does virtually everything including welcoming and chatting his guests in the cosy bar arrear before going down to the candlelit restaurant where he cooks the best food you can get in Stamford and probably everywhere else besides for that matter.|The room in this listed 300 year old building are up a warren of passages to rooms that although not huge have everything you can need including your breakfast in the room's fridge for you to have whenever you want it in the morning.|It is a famous Stamford institution and tremendous value too!

Perfect position in town to access everything in stamford. We stayed here for an overnight stay for a weekend in stamford. Decided to try out the hotel for dinner and we weren't disappointed. This place is definitely a hidden treasure when it comes to great quality food at a great price. Okay, it may not be buzzing with activity but if you are looking for quality you will find it here. Can't recommend it enough. It is obvious from what was served up that the chef/owner loves producing a great meal with quality produce.

The worst hotel we've ever stayed in. In fact calling it an Hotel was a complete misrepresentation. The bedroom was cramped, one wall was made of unpainted plywood and the continental breakfast was in a small fridge inside a cupboard.|We should have picked up on the fact that the proprietor wanted paying before we'd seen the room!|The next morning we found there was no hot water for a bath( no shower) so we were ushered to the floor below to use a shower in another room.|When we asked for our money back we were told we should have paid more and gone elsewhere.|There didn't appear to be anyone else staying there and even the proprietor chose to live further down the street. |Needless to say we will never stay there again and strongly advise anyone else to re-think before booking

Fairly unique place restaurant with 8 rooms.We had no2 right at the top . Breakfast was in a cupboard in a fridge in the room.Toaster and kettle in with fridge. To get in you need to ring Portuguese owner who is resident next door. We didn't make use of bar or restaurant..In fact last night nobody had booked for food so the bar area was locked up..We had a front door key and room key.It was located very central to town. As we didn't make use of the facilities we cannot score on the service.Room wise certain things need to be tidied up..But we got a great night's sleep..

If you appreciate quality authentic cuisine and wine then you'll love the restaurant at Candlesticks. Nelio (chef / owner) cooks everything from scratch. I had the most delicious lobster bisque and beef bougorginon. A small daily menu that demonstrates the freshness of ingredients and his dedication to provide dishes that resonate the family tradition and knowledge of Portuguese and Mediterranean cuisine.
I cannot recommend this place enough and have already been raving to my very foodie friends from France and Italy to book dinner here as they will be delighted. Don't miss out!!!
I'll definitely be back and wouldn't stay anywhere else in Stamford.

Very disappointing visit,on expressing concerns about the unfinished appearance of the room( one wall was bare hard wood, apparently recent soundproofing had been carried out,but the job hadn,t been completed,not painted or papered),the proprietor appeared quite complacent.
I didn,t feel the room should have been available for occupancy in it,s current state!
I explained on booking that I,d had a recent knee injury,but sadly this wasn,t taken into consideration,we were on the 2nd floor,the room had an ensuite with a bath,no shower or shower attachment,I mentioned this the following day,and was told that " perhaps I could have given you a room with a walk in shower"!!!
I felt the accomodation spoilt our stay,we were due to stay for 2 nights,but moved to alternative hotel,very disappointed,wouldn,t recommend staying here.
