I recently had the pleasure of staying at Cartmel Old Grammar in the picturesque Lake District on 10 May 2025, and I must say it was an exceptional experience deserving of a full 5-star rating.

From the moment I arrived, the service was impeccable. The staff were attentive, friendly, and went out of their way to ensure a comfortable stay. One of the highlights was the breathtaking view from the hotel, overlooking the racecourse and the serene countryside, which provided a perfect backdrop for relaxation.

The culinary offerings were equally impressive. The food was exquisite, showcasing local flavours prepared to perfection. Dining was a delight, both at the hotel and within the charming local village of Cartmel, which is home to several welcoming hostelries and even boasts two Michelin-starred restaurants - a true treat for any food enthusiast.

Overall, Cartmel Old Grammar provided an outstanding blend of superb service, stunning scenery, and gourmet delights, making it an unforgettable stay. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Lake District.

Great lunch with interesting menu. Quality of food and service is great. Managed to dot outside in a lovely light area overlooking the rave course. Drinks and wine great. Good Car parking and just far enough out of the village centre to create a calm quiet atmosphere

My friend and I stayed at Cartmel Old Grammar last night while we were visiting the area to eat at L’Enclume. It was absolutely faultless! We were made to feel so welcome and Lauren couldn’t do enough for us, calling us a taxi and checking we had one sorted when we needed. The decor is so tastefully done, everywhere is spotlessly clean, every little detail has been considered. Breakfast was brilliant too, and though we didn’t have any of the other snacks available through the day the menu sounded terrific. It was a lovely short stroll into Cartmel itself. I can’t wait to bring my husband to come back and stay, and wouldn’t hesitate for a second to recommend! Thank you for a wonderful stay 🙌🏼

A perfect country retreat, which has recently been taken over and reopened to the public.

This is definitely a go to if you are heading to Cartmel, not only for rooms, but food as well.

The staff were amazing, the rooms were spotlessly clean and the breakfast was 10/10!!!

We stumbled across this hotel while staying in Cartmel for the Easter holidays. The setting is stunning and we went back several days in a row for a drinks in the lounge area and the terrace outside, which is a brilliant sun trap! The owners and staff are very attentive and friendly and the drinks were lovely. Would highly recommend as a lovely spot for a drink (or food) when staying in Cartmel. We will definitely be back!

We had a great stay at Cartmel Old Grammar Hotel! The property is beautiful and well-kept, and the village of Cartmel is charming.
The details, like quality linens and nice bath products, make a difference. The staff was the standout—super friendly and attentive.

We had the most wonderful stay at Cartmel Old Grammar Country House and cannot recommend it highly enough! From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the fabulous owners, Lauren and Greg, whose passion and care for this historic gem shine through in every thoughtful detail.

The rooms were beautifully appointed—comfortable, stylish, and full of character. Every space radiated charm and tranquillity. The food was absolutely delicious—thoughtfully prepared, locally inspired, and served with genuine warmth.

Special thanks to Connor and Esther, who were attentive, friendly, and made us feel like old friends. Their hospitality added so much to our experience.

Evenings were especially magical—sipping cocktails at sunset on the terrace, followed by nightcaps in the cosy Whisky Room, made for the perfect end to each day.

The location is also fantastic—peaceful and scenic, yet just a short stroll from the heart of Cartmel village, including the world-class Michelin-starred restaurants, L’Enclume and Rogan & Co. It truly is the best of both worlds.

The serene ambience of the house, the incredible hospitality, and the charm of Cartmel made our stay unforgettable. We can’t wait to return!

The icing on the Cartmel cake! What a fabulous addition to our already wonderful village. Lauren and Greg are impeccable hosts, and the setting couldn’t be more perfect. From the moment you approach the entrance, there’s a sense of warmth and welcome. The cocktail bar exudes romance—an ideal spot to pop that all-important question, followed by the dreamiest location for a wedding celebration.
