My daughter and I greatly enjoyed our stay at the Castle View Guest House this past June, 2024. It's location is as close as you can get to the University and the Cathedral, shops, and dining. Room was very comfortable - breakfast was good with ample portions for my daughter and I. We only stayed one night as we were heading north to Northumberland for the bulk of our vacation but will return and stay longer. The only "nit" - not the fault of the proprietors - is parking - not unexpected due to the close proximity to the town center. As a yank driving - backing up to park in the tight and very infrequently available parking spaces across the street from the Guest House was challenging. It took me about an hour circling the block for an end of row spot to open that I could easily get my car into. A tip - at least what I did - was buy 24 hours parking from the conveniently located pay station rather than use the 3 hour pass provided by the guest house - 18 pounds - well worth it as no hassle or worries from the ever present parking enforcement officers.

Nice small B&B just across the river from Durham Cathedral and Castle. Charming building (a little hard to find - best thing is navigate to St Margaret of Antioch Church which is right next door) with modern updating inside. Quiet street. Superbly prepared individual breakfast.

Very clean and tidy. Excellent bathroom and decent breakfast. I liked the location - very quiet with an amazing view and a short walk across the river to the market square.

Stayed here three nights in October for a Solo trip and chose this place for location and it's reasonable price.

Firstly the room. It was clean and modern with a cozy and homely feel. Tiny spots of mold on the corner wall which were only visible when the main lights were on. This doesn't bother me however I know some clean freaks out there would really not like this.

The bathroom was lovley, clean and clearly done recently, no dirt or mould and the shower was spacious and powerful which was lovley. The only criticism with the bathroom appeared to be some subsidence on the floor near the showe as there was an indent in the floor which was quite noticeable.

Not an issue for me but I could imagine someone older or frailer could easily twist their ankle or slip on this if they were either unaware or not careful.

The beds were comfy, tv good and overall the room was very spacious.

The breakfasts were really amazing both times I had them. The first day I had poached eggs on toast which were perfectly cooked with runny yolks but set whites. The eggs appeared to be of a high quality as they were very orange yoked and tatsed amazing.

They offer fruit, yoghert, and cereal plus tea and coffee. I'm not sure if it's the northern water but the tea was amazing and the staff were amazing.

The second breakfast I had was the full English which again was fantastic. Perfectly sized and the meat was top quality. No cheap sausages here. Everything was well cooked and served with toast it went down a treat. I would appreciate some more colour on the bacon. However, I get that it's probably cooked in the oven for speed and convenience.

The option of beans over tomato's would be a nice touch but again it would probably cause issues with speed and efficiency.

The location is amazing as its a 5 min walk to the market and maybe 7 to the cathedral. I thought the price reasonable and I would certainly return again.

Castle View ticked all the right boxes. Very comfortable beds. The big cushions on top were great to rest on after a long day out and about. Modern, clean bathrooms. Very quiet. Superb location between the station and the city centre. Decent breakfast to cap it off

Lovely welcome from friendly people. Comfy beds and no plastic mattress covers! Room was spacious and beautifully decorated with lots of space for clothing etc. The shower was excellent, lots of hot water. Breakfast well cooked and delicious. |The guesthouse is just a few minutes walk from the centre and the views were lovely. There is a rather steep hill to climb up to property as Durham is a very hilly place! But there are benches placed strategically if you need a breather, and you can always pretend that you're looking at the scenery! I would happily return to this guesthouse. A warm welcome from Anne awaits, on a very wet and windy afternoon. We parked and paid for on street parking across the road, no parking at the guest house but Anne gave us a free pass for the following day. Sundays are free. Beautiful decor throughout. We were at the top of the house in room 7. Even though there were plenty of other guests, we didn't hear anyone. The same can't be said for the students who were noisy till around 2 in the morning both nights. Nothing can be done about this, you're in a university city. Breakfast was a preordained at a set time, between 8 and 9am. Very good quality, teas coffees juices fruit yoghurt and full cooked breakfast. I really hate food waste, and this seems to have that eliminated. I've already recommended Castle View to family and friends thinking of visiting Durham. |
