Stayed in the family room with two young children, fantastic room more than enough space and in the perfect location. Room very clean on arrival and had an immediate homely feel. And being able to walk right out onto church street was perfect for the kids who loved the little shops and cobbled streets. Already wanting to book again very soon.

I stayed here the last Friday in June, with a friend. She booked it and was very impressed with how the owner communicated. He gave clear information about our stay and answered any questions she had. Chartwell retreat rooms are located above The Blitz restaurant on church street, which looks like it is getting revamped, so may change name. I grew up in Whitby, so I know it well and found the place easily. The owner did send clear directions, so even if you aren’t familiar with Whitby it would be easy to find. The door to the place is done an alleyway at the side of The Blitz. There are some quite steep narrow stairs up to the three rooms, as they are on the second floor. We were in room 3 which had a double bed, tv, lots of tea/coffee/ milk with a kettle. There was also a mini fridge. Towels were soft and the bed was very comfortable. There was also a fan in the room for hotter days. The room is not huge, but ok for a couple of people. The bathroom was nice with hand soap and shower gel provided. The toilet has a masher system which was a bit noisy and did smell on occasions. Not the best, but also not a major problem. There was a family room next to us and then in the attic there was another family room for 4. It was fairly quiet except the creamy floorboards, but this place is a very old building. The location is perfect, you literally step outside and you are on the street that leads to the abbey. We would definitely stay here again, as everything is within walking distance. There is plenty of parking over the other side of the bridge and a small carpark just down the street from chartwell, but this was full when we arrived. I would definitely recommend this place, as a base for exploring Whitby.

Myself and 2 children aged 13 & 16 stayed here for one night in room 2 during the summer holidays.
We arrived at about 4 pm and it was very busy in Whitby.
Great location once you’re settled in, but parking was difficult so be prepared to walk 10 minutes to the accommodation..
Not ideal if you’re disabled as the stairs to the rooms are fairly steep.
Room was spacious enough for the 3 of us.
Unfortunately you can’t open the bathroom door from the inside as the handle does not work, this was previously mentioned by another reviewer in March, if it did shut and your alone you would have to smash it open.
Paint was peeling by the window, the Wi-Fi kept dropping out, the smallest fridge in the world would not work, carpets need a deep clean as I would suspect they were new approx 2 to 3 years ago and finally the beds are of poor quality every time you moved they groaned and squealed like a ….
In conclusion ÂŁ165 is a bit on the expensive for what you get, if breakfast was included it would take the edge off it but it seems Whitby can demand that sort of money at peak season, but Whitby is now ticked.

Lovely place, great location. We enjoyed our stay a lot. Only complaint was the bathroom door in our room handle was broken. If I was staying there alone I wouldn't of been able to get out bc the handle was broken and kept falling off on the inside. Other than that everything was perfect. We stayed in room 2.

Our room was lovely and in an incredibly convenient location. The room was warm and the beds were very comfy. There was plenty of space for a family with two children. It was our first time in Whitby and can’t wait to come back, would happily return to Chartwell Retreat!

We were given a code for the key box before we arrived, this didn’t work, so my husband called into The Blitz cafe and they had the keys. We were then told no breakfast was available as the cafe was closed the next day, we booked on a BnB basis, so that wasn’t a great start!
The room was basic but clean.

Fantastic little place.
We had the attic space which is amazingly spacious, well finished, clean and quiet despite it's central location.
Cannot recommend highly enough.
