We returned home yesterday from our one night stay in Elford house. What an audacity to call our room (12) a "deluxe" room! Lime green wallpaper, a geometric patterned duvet cover in royal blue and beige colours, beige curtains and a grey rug. Vile! The website clearly states that there is a comfortable area in the room in which we could "sit and relax". Our comfy area consisted of a wooden card table and 2 wooden chairs situated under the sloping roof which made it nigh on impossible to use (even if we'd wanted to!)|The website also states that there is parking for one car per room. There was no space when we arrived, so we had to park down the hill about 50 yards away and carry our luggage to the property. I counted the parking spaces at Elford house and found there to be 10 spaces. How do 12 cars (number of rooms) fit into 10 spaces?|The website also says toiletries would be provided. Not even a small bar of soap in our bathroom with which to wash our hands after using the loo. We had to go out to buy all that we needed.|Please please pleeeeze do NOT stay here. It's absolutely the worst place I've ever stayed and not even reasonably priced. Am utterly disgusted with the owners of this property who are obviously trying to make money with no thought for the comfort of their guests.

I booked two nights at Elford House based on the headline number of 5 star reviews. If I had looked further I would have seen that, out of a total of the 3 reviews left since Aug '21, two of those were 2 stars! My husband has left a 1 star review on their website (inadvertently stating payment as £195). I actually paid £178 (room only) up front for the worst B&B experience ever. From the inhospitable and dreary entrance lobby with the key boxes, through a tired and soulless trip to our room, and the actual room itself (No 9), described as DELUXE, our feeling was that of a hostel with no host present. The room was basically and unattractively furnished. There were no toiletries apart from one mini tablet of soap on the sink and there was black mould on the shower sealant. Having spent a short time in the room we decided to find somewhere else to stay. Eventually we found a really nice, welcoming place and transferred our luggage. I messaged Devon Howard, who had sent me the keycode and who I assume is the owner, to explain why we had left. Two weeks on and I have not had a reply or acknowledgement, or any offer to repay my £178. This says it all. I'm afraid. So be very wary.

Having pre-paid £198 for a 2 night stay at Eldon House on a room only basis, my wife and I decided on arrival and after seeing our "de luxe"room (no 9) to stay elsewhere. The house had the look and feel of a hostel. We retrieved our room key from a key box in the lobby as there was no one to welcome us. Our "de luxe" room was under the eaves on the top floor. The room was drab and dreary, with a mish mash of 70's style furniture and sadly lacking any degree of comfort. There were no toiletries in the bathroom, save one tiny bar of handsoap. There was black mould on the shower sealant. The bedding was poly cotton.
The favourable reviews for this B&B are between 3 and 6 years old (apart from one very recent one), something we had not fully appreciated when we made the booking.
We messaged the person who appears to be the owner? manager? with our concerns but to this minute have received no reply. This just about sums up our hugely disappointing experience.

Really enjoyed our stay here. Immaculate, spacious room. Catering for these times we now live in. Breakfast delivered to your room by 8;30 each day. Anything you need is left at your door. We stayed in room 6 on the second floor and couldn’t hear a sound and slept really well - bed was perfect. ||It’s a ten minute walk to the harbour. A bit of a hill on the way back - but to be honest was perfect to walk off all the fabulous food we ate from all the wonderful restaurants nearby.

On booking, I was concerned about the self service check-in. I don't use a mobile phone and was worried I might find myself unable to access the hotel. However, the code and info was e-mailed and it was no problem at all.||Having a car park space allocated to each room is a great benefit in Whitby. While I was there everyone parked considerately and it worked well.||Room was well furnished and bed was comfortable with decent linen. There was a sofa, wardrobe, chest of drawers and bistro table/chairs. Shower room was clean and toiletries were of a good quality. Ideally bath towel could be better and softer, but not a huge issue.||There was a fridge, well stocked hospitality tray, iron/board and hairdryer.||The breakfast hamper (delivered at 8.30) is fabulous - lots of choice including hot bread, cereal, cheese and fruits. Your rubbish and used crockery/cutlery are removed daily. It is quite a treat to relax over breakfast and "slob around" before ||heading out for the day.||There was little noise either inside or outside the hotel and it is easy to find when arriving in town. It is a steady downhill work to the harbour, which does of course make it a steep uphill walk on the way back - it is hard going & if you are on the 2nd floor it's also a bit of a hike up to your room when you arrive. But Whitby is very hilly and if you really did struggle there is a bus stop at the door. ||Other than settling up on departure I didn't have any direct contact with the owners. But I'm sure you could get hold of them if you were really stuck with anything. I always appreciate it when a hotels such as this provide reasonably priced rooms for single travellers, who are so often ripped off
