The hotel itself is placed in such a beautiful place. Tones of walks which were easy to find, the town below is amazing and so cute. The scenery that you can see as you come out the hotel is just great especially coming from a city, it’s so refreshing. Loved exploring. The room we stayed in was designed lovely, bed was really comfortable, really nice shower and the changes made in each room in terms of theme were really cool. Very clean and felt safe, the staff were also lovely and really helpful and welcoming. In the room there was heating, a TV, kettle etc. Really cozy. Also good amount of parking, it is on a hill though (obviously can’t be helped but be prepared ?)

We stayed in one of the Willow room which was really lovely, cute and atmospheric. Staff was professional and helpful. Little negative points were that one of our glasses in the room was not properly washed and we heard some big noises on our velux window at 7.30 am.

Overall quite a poor experience. Family of 2 adults, 1 toddler, 1 infant, stayed 3 nights in a Princess room. ||||Check-in was brief and we did not get told about the restaurant. Once we realised there was one, we discovered that you had to pre-book.||||The hotel room itself was dirty. Carpet had some vile stains. The toilet / shower wet room smelt of sewage. No housekeeping during the 3 nights. No air vents which meant the room was very moist (and smelly).||||The TV would randomly turn on (middle of night and when we were out). I suspect the same remote is used for all the TVs and there was cross interference. Woke up our infant multiple times. Ended up turning it off at the wall.||||Each morning that we stayed there was a strong smell of weed around reception at 7am. ||||Warning: the water is unsafely hot!!!||||The kitchenette was a microwave... I was expecting more. Perhaps even a sponge and soap to wash up with.||||No plates, cutlery etc were available until we requested them. Our request for a sharp knife to cut our food was declined... no sharp knifes are kept on site. Makes me question what happens in the kitchen?||||In the Princess room we were in the maximum height for the shower head was about 5 foot 6 inches, which resulted in the two adults bending to clean. Inconvenient but not end of the world. That said, the temperature knob was easy to nudge (when bent) and hot water was extremely hot. I found myself screaming multiple times.||||Our front door did not align with the lock well, this making it hard to make safe. The back patio doors did not align either. ||||On the plus side, the toddler liked the climbing frame out front. Parking was OK. The pizza surprisingly good.||||This would have actually got a 3 star review if it was not for the unsafe hot water.

We stayed in the promonarde rooms two adults and two children. You would never thought we was staying in a shipping container very quiet, very clean even the edges of the carpet was hoovers smelt lovely when we walked into the room. Compact be great fun in our room was shower , small tv, hairdryer, tea and cover . 10metre along was another room that contained toaster, microwave, full sink with washing up liquid kitchen . Just up the steps was hotel reception and entertainment room for children did activities at night like kids disco, games room free football table, and Lego table . Above reception is a restaurant though we didn’t eat in there looked nice. We went to the local pub called the fishpond great food and bands on at the weekend. We had two nights first day went round the Gulliver’s park second day we went to heights of Abraham . This place is great for kids we did look at the other rooms but found you got more outdoor space on the promonarde room ie could sit and watch the kids play. There is also a bus you can sleep on that looked great fun too .

It was a pleasant experience; the rooms and bathrooms were very clean and tidy. The wooden decorations created a charming tree house vibe, and the book-themed exterior of the room was impressive. Additionally, the price for such a spacious room for one night was quite reasonable.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the explorers retreat hotel after booking a day out for my family at Gullivers kingdom.

After a fantastic day in the park we checked into the explorers retreat hotel and went to see the room. Having experienced countless hotels from basic to luxurious. I feel this is well priced and fits perfectly with the setting.

We are a family of 5 and the room suited as well, comprising of a double bed and triple bunks which were a hit with our 3 children aged 10, 6 and 3. The room itself was clean, well-equipped and themed like a pirate ship which continued the fun after the day in park, making it a special treat for the kids. The microwave, sink and mini fridge is very convenient, making meal prep for our toddler easy.

The explorers retreat hotel has a bar/restaurant which was welcomed after a day in the park and they also provided entertainment for the kids in the evening. The food was better than expected for the price but the full English breakfast in the morning was a bit bland.

The whole experience made a surpise weekend away feel like a memorable holiday. The friendly staff and inviting location would certainly make us return, despite the 3 hour drive.

Excellent overnight stay with grandchildren in a princess room. Children loved it. Staff all friendly and helpful. DVD player and films available on request.
Only downside was small selection for breakfast. Some yoghurt and fruit would have been great.

Stayed in the pirate themed room and there was a terrible smell in the room. Everytime we left and returned it hit you as you walked in. Dont know if it was stale cigarette, damp or a mixture of both.

Clean on the surface but very very dusty and dirty if you look closely. Left a drink on the side for a short will and the dust from the bedside light had dropped and was floating on the top.

Moved the bed looking for the wifes earing and there was so much crap amongst the thick layer of dust under there. Including a tv remote if one was lost (room 1), wipes, pencil crayons and pop bottle lid.

We could people in the room above walking around.

The balcony was covered in leafs and debri from the trees.

There isnt any shops in Matlock bath so if you need anything make sure you take it with you. 4 tea bag for a room of 4 for 2 nights wasn't going to cut it.

For £319.70 it was very overpriced.
