Came for a spa day & afternoon tea purchased off buy gift for my friends 40th, wasn’t expecting much in-fact was a bit nervous. I’m glad we gave it a chance as we had a lovely day. Don’t come expecting a spa, it’s a health club nevertheless we enjoyed the jacuzzi , steam room & sauna (all clean and worked as expected) the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We were given a robe & 2 small towels each which was more than adequate. We took our own flip flops and bottles of water (there was a fountain but no cups) the lockers are free and very spacious. There were 5 loungers (4 new , 1 older one) and approx 7 rattan chairs . The changing rooms were very dated and smelt a little but we were literally in there 10 minutes so don’t let it put you off . The temperature was kept nice , it was clean and by the looks of things was having a make over. Go with an open mind and remember it’s a health club with facilities not a luxury spa !
Now for afternoon tea , which is served in the main hotel. Bare in mind my friend owns a tearoom & im a baker by trade so we had plenty to compare it too. Well it was fantastic ! Choice of teas coffee & hot chocolate, we opted for earl grey very nice. Shortly after a big well presented stand came out with, 6 types of sandwiches on nice soft bread with lots of homemade fillings like chicken mayo , fresh salmon & cheese etc. Next the scones served with clotted cream & jam , these weren't made in house but still tasty, if you have room there was then 8 mini cakes ! Not shop brought as others have said and definitely not dry by any means but I’d say they are shipped in, this did not by any means make them inferior they were so good !! We couldn’t eat them all and asked for them to be wrapped to take away. The price they charge for the afternoon tea I would 100% go back and recommend.
I feel like people only ever review when things are bad so please believe me when I say give this place a try , they have just changed hands and are obviously trying hard to turn it around. We really enjoyed it and would return.

Usefully close to the international conference centre which is a short drive away. But that's where the advantages end...
The room was dated with tired decor and a musty smell. The shower did work but had some attractive black mould, whilst the hot tap span round and round.
Service at reception was slow with often no one available. A second room card took 20-30 attempts to code, but at least they gave me two cards knowing that they may not work reliably...
Breakfast was cooked... But dry sausages and bacon and mushrooms that seemed impossibly overcooked. There was brown sauce to improve the flavour on the second day.
Car parking was ample...
It really does need updating and somewhere other than the corridors to keep the bags of washing...

Used a pamper day for 2 voucher from activity superstore. We was told we would get a 25 minute treatment each plus use of the spa facilities all day.|The only good thing about the day was the massage itself. Women was very polite and professional and made us both feel comfortable. She did her best with the limited facilities she had- the room is tiny and dated, with outside noise from the pool.|There is also free parking at the facility. |From the moment me and my mum walked in it was a throwback to the 80's. The robes had massive holes in and had definitely seen better days. The changing rooms where like school, unclean and had an awful smell. Jacuzzi broken and the pool was freezing - my mum did not use it. Personally when going to a spa, I'm expecting an adult only pool and instead we had children. Sauna had no water to throw on dry rocks. Steam room was doable but still that awful smell. |Water tap with no cups to use. |We was expecting to spend the whole as we were travelling nearly 2 hours for it. Our massage was 10-11 and we left just before 12.

We visited the hotel and spa for afternoon tea and an overnight stay. This was bought for a birthday present for my partner and left us with a real sour taste in our mouth’s!!||||I hate to say this but this is possibly the worst hotel and spa I have ever experienced.||||I know it’s an old building which is not a problem, but it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be clean.||||We encountered so many problems during our stay and if we didn’t laugh we would have cried.||||When we arrived for our afternoon tea a lady showed us to our table, although when we went to sit, she said “oh not that table, the next one over”||Then when our food came out, the lady said “one set of sandwiches are vegetarian and no butter on request” which was correct. But what we didn’t expect was instead of cheese and chutney sandwiches, it was simply chutney||Once we finished we went to get our bags and go up to the room, the lady gave us our key cards and told us where to go.||When we got to room 31, we scanned the cards and…. Nothing! So I went back downstairs and the lady loaded the cards. Finally we got in the room and had a look around. We went in the bathroom and we had 1 towel between us, so I thought I’d phone down to reception and ask for another, but we didn’t have a phone & then number on the internet didn’t work of my mobile.||So I went back downstairs and asked a different lady if we could have another towel and some more shampoo and soap as there was a tiny bottle for 2 people. She was very abrupt and seemed annoyed at my request. She asked a man to go and deliver some towels to our room…. This didn’t happen.||So we decided to go and relax at the spa instead and collect the towel on the way back.||||We got to the spa and a man come to the desk and gave us 2 towels no bigger than a tea towel as he said he hadn’t had a towel delivery. I asked for 2 each then as that wouldn’t dry an infant, he said I can’t have any more. I went into the male changing room which smelt like stale wee and was really discouraging, but I wasn’t in there long and thought I’d get straight into the hot tub. My partner went into the female changing room and was so shocked at the smell and the amount of dirt. She then joined me in the hot tub and asked why there are no bubbles, I pressed the button to start it and nothing! I knocked the door and the man said “yeah it’s broken and we’re waiting for it to be fixed” so we both then got in the pool, which considering it’s supposed to be heated was freezing! I got out and decided I will use the steam room & sauna, steam room had a funny smell and sauna had no bucket of water for the rocks. I went and asked the man if we could have our robes, he gave me 2 dressing gowns, one with a hole in. At this point we were loosing all hope. We were in spa maybe 45 mins tops and had hope to return the next morning after breakfast, but after this experience we didn’t return the next day.||||I went to reception on the way back to the hotel and asked again for a towel, the lady kindly gave me 2 and did apologise.||||Got back to the room which had a frousty smell (as did all of the halls which made my partner feel sick) and we were both going to shower off and go out.||When i went to get in the shower, there was black mould in the door seals and around the tray, which is disgusting. But had to shower as we’d been in the pool, so I got in the shower, went to put the soap in the soap dish and it fell straight off, confused, I looked and realised the soap dish was broken in half, after this we both quickly showered and then got out and looked for the hair dryer to dry my partners hair which is supposed to be in each room and guess what, no hair drier, so instead of ringing down, remember no phone, I had to walk down and grab one.||||We were going to stay in the hotel and eat, but were really discouraged by all the previous events, so we went out for food.||||Got back on the night, instead of going to have a drink at the bar which we would normally do, we went back to the room, the key wouldn’t work again, so had to go back to the desk, no body was around, so the man behind the bar came to help. He sorted the keys, we went back to the room and literally went straight to sleep.||||The day after we reluctantly went down for breakfast holding no hope at all.||||On your menu, online it offers a continental breakfast including croissants and pastries to order, well this isn’t on your menu in the restaurant and all there was on offer was rice crispies, wheatabix, 2 different flavoured yoghurts, toast, jam, honey and marmalade. This is the part of the breakfast my partner eats as being veggie she can’t eat the majority of the cooked breakfast.||||So all she ate was beans and hash browns as she doesn’t eat tomato, mushrooms or eggs||||The lady asked us whether we would like tea or coffee, then bought it to the table, but didn’t give us anything to drink from. So we asked a different waiter and he fetched us some cups. The coffee was extremely weak and had to be replaced||||We quickly left, packed and left the hotel.||||We didn’t complain as the man on the desk was to busy on his mobile and to be honest I was dreading being offered another night or something like that.||||I would have asked for my money back, but like I said, the man on the desk was busy on his mobile.||||I will say all but 1 member of staff were friendly and were as helpful as could be.||||I have added photos below.||||Believe me I don’t like complaining about things but this was just too much. Having travelled over a hour away to be subjected to what some would describe as inhumane conditions was really bad. We wanted to have a nice relaxing night away, something we don’t get very often at all with having 5 children but ended up feeling more stressed then when we arrived||||I really hope this email insures you to get these major things resolved as I’m sure the hotel would be a fab place if it was looked after.||||2 really disappointed “guests”

Unfortunately a very tired looking hotel. Stayed for one night on business. Outside looks tired with weeds in roads/paths, tired building with a lot of paint peeling or missing from windows. Inside looks worn out and as if decorated in the early 90s! Leisure centre tired and apparently they’ve stopped spa days speaking to a member-it’s small, lights not working, sockets with live wires hanging off walls in places, no hot water in the showers (although changing rooms have heated floors!). Hotel room basic, bed was comfy and room was quiet but roller blind on window which let the light in at 5am. Bathroom rather mouldy and damage. Breakfast was ok apart from cheap bread, no butter, didn’t touch the rather anaemic and super cheap looking sausages. Rather a disappointing and run down hotel. If I was here for leisure or a wedding I’d be very very disappointed. I didn’t try the restaurant as advised by locals in the pool that lovely restaurants only a 15 minute walk away-which were very good.

Worst Hotel I’ve Ever Stayed In – We Nicknamed It Fawlty Towers

I booked a three-night stay and it was a complete disaster from the start. In fact, the issues began before we even arrived. The hotel rarely answers the phone, doesn’t return calls, and ignores emails — not a great first impression.

When you drive up the long entrance, it looks quite nice — but don’t be fooled. Turn back while you can.

The hotel looks okay from the outside, but that’s where the positives end. The moment we stepped inside, we were hit by an awful, damp smell mixed with sewage — this continued throughout the building.

The hotel itself is tired and in serious disrepair. My room was dirty with mould spots, and I didn’t receive any housekeeping throughout the stay. Cups weren’t cleaned or replaced, no clean towels, and no hairdryer, even though it was listed in the amenities. The shower was filthy and mouldy. Walls are paper-thin — you can literally hear other guests using the bathroom.

Food was a joke. I ordered “homemade tomato soup with a fresh hot roll and butter” and received a tiny portion of watered-down tinned soup with half a cold roll. Breakfast was even worse — no plates, so I had to put a full English breakfast in a cereal bowl. The buffet food was cold and greasy, with three empty containers where the beans, mushrooms, and eggs should’ve been. No tomato or brown sauce, weak coffee that took ages, and the only plant-based milk option was almond.

The spa and pool facilities were just as grim. Cloudy pool water that was too warm, a constant smell of drains, and no lock on the toilet door. The sauna was lacklustre, and the jacuzzi didn’t even work.

One staff member was pleasant, but others clearly didn’t want to be there. The overall atmosphere was miserable — and every guest we saw seemed to be complaining at reception about one thing or another.

This is not a three-star hotel. It’s overpriced, dirty, outdated, and run-down. The furniture was damaged, the bed was lumpy and squeaky, and I didn’t get a single decent night’s sleep.

Absolutely would not recommend. I will never stay here again.

Checked in, checked out! It's hard to express in words how disappointing this hotel is. As soon as you walk in you get a sense that only the most hardened contractors would stick around. It has an odd smell, I think it was a mixture of damp and cooking fat. The room was not so much tired as completely exhausted! The carpets were worn and dirty, the windows were filthy. The bathroom was a no go zone. |When I returned to reception to explain why I wouldn't be staying in the room I was shown an alternative. Nope! |I was back in the car and down the drive like a rat up a pipe. |I would give this place a swerve.

I have to say I've been disappointed with the communication from the get go of having a mothers day spa and afternoon tea weekend day experience. I tried to book this in December 2024 to be told they had no available weekends for over 3 months the only date was for mother's day this year which they didn't tell me at the time. Multiple times of calling to redeem at the time the lady I spoke to didn't accept the only voucher code on the print off I had as a gift. Then it was accepted by someone she spoke to. Anywhere else I've booked before for these experiences has booked the afternoon tea in at the time which was never done even with multiple times calling with no answer, multiple e-mails with no answer. Even then I received a bizarre reply saying someone didn't work for the hotel anymore and to e-mail another e-mail address even though this was the e-mail address on the website! When we arrived we went to the main hotel rather than the leisure services. There was no greeting and no one at the hotel desk. We asked where do we need to check in and were told the leisure desk. A similar thing happened at this check in. We were stood there with 2 guys in the back and a guest had to say I think they are in the back for one to come out and apologise as they couldn't see us on the camera. Check in was great from this point and he immediately rectified the afternoon tea and said it's not been booked in and usually is and said after our treatments it would be ready whenever we were. The treatments by Helen were the best part by far. We had to have them separately in other places they have been at the same time that's the only negative. After using the facilities we strolled up to the hotel to enjoy afternoon tea pretty relaxed after the treatments. Here we waited in an empty lobby with no service whatsoever ever for drinks for over 40 mins to then be called into an empty dining room for the afternoon tea. No idea what the wait was for or an apology. Afternoon tea was okay I've had better. Rating 2 stars seems fair based on our experience of lack of service through phone calls, e-mails, non booking of afternoon tea regardless of the e-mails and being made to wait 40 mins when we were told to go up after treatments and it would be ready. Various staff saw us and not one offered us a drink or indication of time. Such a lovely building a shame the service let it down. The two stars are for Helen and the gentleman on the leisure desk who resolved the afternoon tea issue. You two were amazing! Thank you!
