Really comfortable one night stay in a beautifully clean, spacious and well appointed family room - which meant as a couple, we had a comfortable sofa as well as the bed. All the staff are very helpful and welcoming. The Fox House is right on the doorstep of fabulous Peak|District walking country, so after walking to admire the panoramic views from Carl Wark and Higger Tor, we really appreciated a delicious evening meal. Good varied menu served by more attentive staff. Although our room was near the quite busy main road to Sheffield, even with the window open, we had a very good sleep - followed by lovely breakfast. Check out isn’t until midday so you can really relax!

Members of our group who had stayed the previous night had warned us during the day about the slowness of service, but quite honestly this was Fawlty Towers stuff. Even though we had pre-ordered, it took an hour before our starter was served, and 3 hours and 20 minutes to get through three courses. One of us nudged them to point out that the couple next to us had been waiting an hour for their main course. The poor serving staff appeared to do their best but looked completely at sea. If you want to visit the Peak District and spend your time sitting in a pub restaurant hoping to be served, this is the place for you. The food was okay, but really not worth all those hours of anticipation.

Our trip to Fox House Inn was to reminisce;|My Grandparents, Norman and Alice Gill were the Inn Keepers of Fox House in 1951-56, their daughter, my mum, Sheila Gill lived there and it’s where she met her husband, my dad, Mr Alvin Spittle. |Mum and I were greeted on arrival by Vicky who couldn’t have done more to make us welcome and her interest in our history was more than we could have dreamed of. Vicky immediately handed us a plaque with the names of past innkeepers and 16 names down was Norman Gill my grandfather. |Vicky made us both feel very valued and cared for. We soon met John, another great member of the team. His interest in our history was so heartfelt and both Vicky and John made time to look through our personal photos and listen to our stories about the Inn during at that time. ||The 1st thing we did was to look for my Mums name, which she had scratched into the glass of one of the main dining room windows. Amazingly it is still there top centre of a leaded pain, now amongst 16 other peoples tags, on various windows. ||We had a wonderful room, with a spectacular view of the countryside and sunset. The access wasn’t ideal for an 89 year old, however that is totally forgivable since I guess most visitors are hikers? ||Fox House is clearly important, both historically and its location in the heart of the most spectacular landscape. The abundance of natural beauty and especially I saw an incredible variety of wild flowers. |We wish Ben, the new manager (Inn Keeper) the best of luck in the ever evolving future of Fox House Inn.

Like a previous reviewer, we had booked three rooms well in advance (October 2023), only to find on arrival (and after eating in the restaurant) that our booking was not available due to a leak in one of the rooms. Having travelled from Northamptonshire, and booking prepaid taxis to take us to and from an event at Chatsworth House, we were beyond disappointed. This was exacerbated by the poor communication skills of the staff, blaming head office and booking.com and informing me that I had been contacted that morning (I hadn’t). After some frustrating and stressful to-ing and fro-ing, the staff did manage to find a solution, and we settled on two of our party sharing one room. We were told that a sofa bed would be moved into the room so they would have a bed each, and that it would be set up ready to sleep in while we were out. We were also given a discount on the room rates, after asking for one, and were told they would “see about” throwing in breakfast in the morning (this was never confirmed either way). We were satisfied with this resolution and would have been happy. Unfortunately, when we arrived back from our event very late and very tired, the sofa bed was still a sofa that needed making up, and there was no duvet. This demonstrated that our custom was not of any value to this hotel. ||The rooms themselves were very tired. Our room had a strong smell of damp, which was very off putting, and there was no soundproofing at all - we may as well have been sharing a room with the couple upstairs, as we could hear every word and movement (which was not ideal!!)||The food was “ok”, but pizzas were delivered to the table uncut, with a steak knife provided to slice them up. However, the young staff waiting on the tables were all very pleasant.||Service at the bar lacked friendliness. The staff generally could do with some customer service training - particularly with complaint resolution. Less “it’s not our fault” and more “we’re so sorry, have a drink on us while we sort this out for you”. We all know things can go wrong, but it’s the way problems are communicated and dealt with that ultimately forms your opinion about the service. In this case it was poor.||Luckily we have no reason to ever return, but I would advise anyone considering booking rooms here to hedge your bets and book elsewhere, so you’re not let down at the last minute.

At check in we were told breakfast was at 7am, this was good for us as we had to leave at 7.45am. Room was lovely, except for the bathroom which was whey too small!
We got up for breakfast and was very dissapointed when breakfast was actually at 8am.
We then wondered where we needed to leave our key as all the doors into the pub was locked, we rang several times as no one answered to start with.
The price of £189 for our 1 night stay WITHOUT breakfast was extortionate for the experience we received. Very dissapointed to say the least

We've been here previously for a meal and drinks, which were ok. Nice outdoor tables looking out over the Peak District scenery.
But this time we stayed two nights and definitely won't go back. Service in the dining rooms is dreadful, both for an evening meal and breakfasts. Mornings were particularly bad. Having waited about 20 minutes to order our breakfasts on Saturday, we had to chase after 40 minutes before the food arrived. The place was not busy so there really was no excuse. It would have been quicker to walk across the road to the cafe at National Trust Longshaw Estate.
The bedroom was ok but nothing exciting, no view from the window and above the bottle banks and area where kitchen staff took their breaks.
Overall, we would not recommend it and will not stay there again despite its excellent location for walking in the Peak District and its proximity to Sheffield.

Great location. The staff were friendly. The pub was very busy on Saturday evening and although the staff were working extremely hard the food wasn’t as good in comparison as when we ate on Friday evening probably just the volume of people to contend with. The room was comfortable but the bathroom was tiny. The views from the pub garden were amazing.

Stayed the night during our UK road trip and this is the one accommodation I regret booking. I felt like I was an annoyance when I checked in. The staff handling the check-in didn't have the correct room ready for us, (not a big deal because we could wait), but it seemed like the biggest inconvenience. It is slightly awkward to bring all your luggage through the restaurant to get to the room but once it the room it was fine. Nice accommodations and large sized room. There was another issue with the staff member that night where she again made me feel like a nuisance. The woman that was running the breakfast service and check out was an absolute sweetheart and tried to make our situation better when it was explained what we dealt with the prior night. I was ready to leave pretty much from the moment we arrived and felt extremely unwelcomed. I've worked in hospitality for many years and know that people are going to have bad nights, but you don't push that on your guests. I recommend finding accommodations elsewhere if staying in the area.
