The location is unbeatable, in the centre but tucked away so it’s really quiet. Lovely characterful design, very clean and the room had everything we needed. The staff were so helpful and lovely. Bed was really comfortable. Instructions to find it were perfect (as you could easily walk past the private entrance.) It’s close to everything and we were able to check out and leave our bags with the team until we were (reluctantly) ready to leave. We will definitely return to Judges Court Hotel ❤️

We had booked this room months ago and had paid in advance (very bad idea in order to earn a few pounds). When we got there, they gave us a room at the basement: the ceiling was extremely low (I am 1.60 and was able to touch it!), there was a small window from which we could see the shoes of the people standing in the terrace.
We asked very politely if we could be given another room, but only a similar one (also at the basement) was available. I said I would give it a try, but I suffer from claustrophobia and just getting in that room would make my heart beat super fast. Impossible to stay there so we decided to leave and look for something else.
We asked for a refund, as we had not touched anything in the room. The receptionist refused because of the "no refund" conditions. She didn't even try to contact the manager to ask, given the very delicate situation. On the contrary, she became aggressive and told us that we should have called to mention our special need! Call to say what? that we don't want a room at the basement? We could not even imagine such a room would exist at a 4-star hotel!
In the end we just got a 49€ voucher at the booking wallet (very poor handling on behalf of booking.com btw). We would expect at least a partial refund, but no, we had to pay 330€ for a room at the basement that we didn't use.

Great value right in the centre of York. Stayed a night on our drive to Scotland (we’re from Australia). We had the top room 12 with a rustic cool vibe.
Hint: Stairs to our apartment were narrow and steep. Cool for us but would be a hard lug with large heavy suitcases.

Perfect location in the heart of York. Need to have your eyes peeled to find it down the passageway off the main road. Room, large, quiet and comfortable. Staff all lovely. Only negative was very small bathroom, smallest in the hotel apparently (room 7) so not ideal for someone over 6 foot but the under floor heating in it was lovely.

We stayed here for 2 nights.. it’s absolutely perfect for the location, 5 minutes from lots of main attractions… dungeons, Viking centre, Bettys, shops, bars & restaurants!!! About 8-10minute walk from the train station.|The hotel is a quirky building, down a little alley , into a court yard.. definitely looks the part. |Our room was ample size and although basic in decor, it was clean and welcoming and had its own charm. The Room got warm but with windows open, it soon cooled down and radiators could be switched off if required. |Bed was comfy and shower powerful enough . |Our only let down was noise.. we were in a basement room.. directly under the main entrance/reception. This meant we could hear people above us, coming in and out of the hotel, the staff in reception at the desk and then on top of that, doors banging very loudly when guests go in and out of rooms. The worst noise was at about 6am, not sure if this was staff/cleaners but it occurred on both mornings of our stay. I appreciate it’s an old building and the doors are heavy but we managed to close ours quietly on returning late to our room! The walls/floors are so thin we could actually hear the people in the room above us, using the toilet. The hotel is set back a little off the street so we didn’t actually hear any outside noise which was good. |Despite the noise we did have a lovely stay, the staff were very friendly.. and we wouldn’t be put off returning for another stay… we would just request a different room, maybe on a diff floor so we weren’t under reception.

We stayed here mid week for two nights and had room number 8, which looked out on the front of the hotel. The room was lovely with so much character. Large bathroom with Molton brown products. Staff very friendly too.
Our only thing which isn't the hotels fault was the noise. We woke at 5:30am to kegs being moved at the front of the hotel which went on for quite some time. The second night an alarm was going off for a while and kegs being moved again. We would stay here again however, we would request a room that's away from the front of the hotel.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for her birthday. It’s an old town house off a cobbled street, in a courtyard. The theme is spot on, an old lodging house used by judges, it’s got rooms named after famous judges. Ours was Sir William Blackstone, room 11. |Firstly the staircase is on the piss, so watch out if you’ve go mobility problems. The room its self was like a sauna, constantly hot! I can imagine it’s like an oven in summer. The floorboards creak too, so expect anyone staying above you to sound like a herd of elephants all night long.|The view was over a service yard, they have no bar or restaurant (so factor that in) and everything in the room is vintage… as in stuff you’d recover from a skip or a bric a brac shop, not antique. |My wife had an awful sleep as there is no soundproofing at all… I mean I know York is supposed to be haunted but it sounded like we were in the middle of a busy street all night long, like people were actually having a conversation in the room with us. Paper thin walls and constant creak creak creak. |All in all, great location for all the attractions and central, but it’s a 10 minute walk from the nearest car park with luggage and the room only board means it’s an expensive “do it yourself” affair.

Fabulous quirky little hotel. Staff were amazing and the room was lovely. Location is great with everything in walking distance. I was looking forward to a visit from the haunted but unfortunately they didn’t visit us !!|Will be recommending this hotel to all our friends & family.
