We were looking for a nice place to stay while touring the Scottish Borders and discovered this lovely B&B. The setting is gorgeous, a 1730 Georgian home surrounded by beautiful gardens in a quiet location a short drive outside of Melrose. Our room was comfortable and spacious with a lovely bath and we appreciate the warm welcome we received. Our hosts were able to share some good tips about the area which meant we saw things we would not otherwise have known about. Breakfasts were delicious and beautifully presented .||This lovely place was well suited to our needs and I can't think of anything I would change.

From booking, then our arrival, nothing seemed too much trouble. Very warm and welcoming, Douglas is a local who wants you to enjoy your stay. Lovely bedroom, very large bathroom, all spotless. The breakfast is a delight, from home grown fruit in the fresh fruit salad, to freshly made drop scones, home made marmalade and jams, and a fantastic cooked breakfast, with freshly laid eggs from their own hens.

We had a two-night break at Kirklands and wish it could have been much longer. This has to be one of Scotland's very best guest houses. It is beautiful Georgian country house in lovely grounds that are open to guests. Our room was excellent, very comfortable bed, well-appointed large private bathroom and plenty of books in the house for guests to enjoy. It's a superb house, spotlessly clean and tastefully (and very impressively) furnished. There is a lovely lounge for guests. It's a couple of miles from the town in lovely countryside and is very peaceful. Douglas is a superb host: friendly, helpful and being a local, possesses a fund of knowledge about the wonderful Scottish Borders and a passion for them. We were lucky to meet Penny, Douglas's wife and their daughter, Katie, a very warm and welcoming family. Breakfasts are excellent, I really enjoyed a traditional Scottish cooked breakfast with haggis and Scottish black pudding, perfectly cooked. My wife is a vegetarian and really appreciated the vegetarian options and being a Scot herself, the Scottish porridge! There was plenty of choice and nothing was too much trouble. It's an easy trip into the delightful town of Melrose and handy for Sir Walter Scott's amazing house, Abbotsford. Douglas is happy to suggest local eating places. The two he recommended, the Monte Cassino (Italian) and Burts Hotel (traditional Scottish) were both excellent. Very many thanks to Douglas and his family for making our stay just wonderful. We will be back!

Home-y. That's the way we feel at The Stables of Kirkland's Cottege. This is our 3rd trip to Scotland in 30 years, and our first in 25, but the charm and authenticity of this place never disappoints. We missed our afternoon flight out of Heathrow to Edinburgh by 10 minutes because customs thought we looked like nefarious characters and felt a wait and questioning was needed. By the time we flew in to Edinburgh, fetched our rental car, and drove to the cottage, it was DARK. For those of you who know Scotland in May, you know how late it was. Douglas was still waiting for us, bless him.
The cottage is immaculate. The kitchen is well -equipped with mini-fridge, clean crockery, microwave, double oven, stove top, washing machine, and circular table with 4 chairs. It has two, well-lit bathrooms, one upstairs with 2 bedrooms, and 1 downstairs where kitchen and sitting rooms are located. I had never been so excited to see a tub in all my life! I will soak in all the hot water I can get! The quiet setting is so peaceful, so tranquil, and bursting with blooms from campanula, bluebells, wisteria, primrose, and tiny daffodils, I'm guessing native ones. Eddie and Saffie, the two resident cats and Ollie, the yellow lab round out the welcoming committee. We love this place. It could not be any more perfect.

Only a two night stay on the way south but what a find. Superb breakfast each morning. Bathroom adjacent, not en suite, but allocated to our bedroom and what a large space, presumably once another bedroom. ||Melrose is no great distance and parking should not present difficulties in the town. Overall, simply excellent. ||

There are places that instantly feel like home, sometimes it's the house, sometimes it's the hosts and here at Kirklands it was both. Our very first ever days in Scotland will be ever so memorable because of Douglas and his amazing house.
There is just so much to mention but I'll just do the highlights:
Amazing breakfast, tailored to your dietary requirements
Great location
Huge sprawling property with beautiful gardens, that was built in 1730!
Victorian decor in the house
Giant victorian bathroom
Fabulous host who is a great repository of local knowledge and is always forthcoming with sharing it.
Bonus: 2 dogs and 2 cats. I'll forever remember olli and barty!

Good breakfast, host helpful but our room was very cold. At no time during our visit did the heating come on. We asked for the radiators in the room to be turned on instead we were given a portable heater and told that there were electric blankets on the beds!. The bathroom which was enormous had no heat at all.

Our room was in the west wing, with lovely views of the grounds and countryside. I had the best sleep for many months, so peaceful was it. Breakfasts were excellent and substantial, with the fresh fruit salad particuarly tasty. The owner Douglas Hardie was very welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. Possibly the best B&B in Scotland.
