We booked this hotel in order to stay over the night before the Rat Race 70 mile ultra marathon. When booking a hotel pretty every hotel in Carlisle was booked up apart from this one.
It was very cheap to book a room with breakfast. And the reviews and rating did scare me.
However the staff were great, super friendly and welcoming. The location was fine, actually on top of a hill so quite nice.
The overall decor of the hotel is not the best but it doesn't pretend to be, this is a low cost hotel so don't expect anything fancy. The rooms very basic and a small window but they seemed clean and the bed was nice. There was a bit of a noise coming from the radiator pipes but nothing too bad. The room was particularly hot however we were given a fan on arrival by reception.
I don't have much bad to say to be honest. We paid peanuts for the hotel and it did it's job and we had a good sleep. So I can't complain!

Jack is a lovely host and the bar is cheap, those are the only good things I can say about this… it was advertised that there is a swimming pool which there is not. Paid extra for a smoking room which I didn’t get. The rooms are pretty outdated and the bathroom had slight mold in the corners. Should not have paid £80 for a night. I’m not usually one to complain but considering you can stay in a premier in with a better experience for half the price that is what I suggest doing.

Despie the previous negative reviews prior to our visit, we had a great overnight stay. Yes, the hotel could do with some fresh painting, however the rooms were very clean. Plenty of fresh towels and linen. Good undisturbed sleep. Staff were very helpful and informative. Full hot/cold breakfast in the morning. Very central for City Centre. And all this for £36.13 for me and my wife!!|First time in Carlise, but will definately be returning to this hotel.

Jack on reception is lovely and so attentive to every need of the guests here. The hotel is very lucky to have him:)
Now as for the kitchen staff, I cannot say it any plainer than this "sack you kitchen staff and start again"! We booked this hotel for the week due to working away from home. Every single day the breakfast was out late and we had to get Jack to go and chase it up! We have to be at work for 7:30, so we rely on the breakfast being out on time! We left the restaurant at 7:15am yesterday morning, and the breakfast items still weren't all out! The guy serving the breakfast has zero customer service, has a bad attitude and just cannot be bothered to be punctual! As a result of his lack if being able to get a breakfast out on time, my husband ended up being a few minutes late in to work this morning (and he's only just started this job)! There has also been no evening meals available despite being told by the hotel that yhey can accommodate this request upon booking our stay, but that hasn't happened! We were going to rebook for all of next week and the week after too, but as a result of the kitchen staff, we have made the decision to book elsewhere. You kitchen staff are losing you custom. You have a good venue and good facilities here, but they are letting it down.

Definitely a no frills hotel, paid £30 for the night.
The hotel does look run down and isn't branded as "Ox Hotel" rather Hiltop Hotel which is confusing at first.
The room seemed clean, however dated. The shower had definitely seen better days and was broken. The toilet also was not stuck down to the floor.
The beds were okay, not brilliant but for a night abslotely fine.
The bar is cheap and the staff are brilliant.
Would go back

Seen several reviews about this place and only booked as i know it couldn't be that bad, well it wasn't, it was far worse. As soon as you walk through the door, you are hit with the smell of faeces i genuinely looked round in case someone had actually taken a dump in the lobby. It went downhill from there, the room was so hot you needed the windows open full, not in this area though, no sir. The car park was littered with glass from smashed windows, must be some clumsy customers. If the only other place available in Carlisle is the train station, i hear platform one is cosy.

Run down hotel. Look at the photo.|As you enter the reception you are hit with the smell of sewage. Revolting.|There was no Internet in the hotel that evening. I couldn’t contact the hotel of my late arrival due to this.|I had to sign a form regarding smoking.|The corridors stink of cigarette smoke. There are no lifts so not suitable for disabled people. My room was basic to say the least. The radiator would not come on. Freezing overnight. No waste bin for rubbish. Water pressure in shower was very low. Had to hold shower head next to my body to get a decent shower. A very dirty footstool at desk in room. The double bed was made from two singles joined in the middle. Electrical botch jobs|It’s a cheap, run down budget hotel.|There are far better out there.|Unless you are on a very tight budget and want to put up with awful facilities - avoid this poor hotel.

It’s a no frills hotel reflected by the price and you can see what you are getting by looking at the photos. Room was clean. Mattress comfortable and TV worked well. Tea and coffee facilities. Shower was powerful. Some rust in the bath. Obvious wear and tear but all functional. Drinks are well priced at the bar. Breakfast was reasonable considering it was included in the price. Easy walk into the centre with pubs and places to eat on the way.
