We had a 3 night stay and chose the hotel for location and size, but did not know until we got there that the kitchen was undergoing major rebuild, which also put the dining room out of action. Thus, breakfast was served in a cold dark bar area and the menu became a lottery of what might be found. We complained to the off-site manager, but 2 months later are still waiting for a response to our emails - an extension of the lack of consideration shown to us as guests.
That said, the staff deserve credit for their apologetic, friendly and helpful nature and the hotel clearly has great potential - our room was quirky (as they all seem to be) but comfortable and warm, although practices were somewhat dated (towels changed daily unless specified and we were locked out one evening before 9 pm).

Welcomed by lovely down to earth staff and made to feel like we're just staying at a mates house! Wonderful and funky room with a gorgeous bath and all the bells and whistles you need! Also the staff laid out a banner and some balloons for my birthday which shows they'll go out their way to make the guests happy! Can't recommend enough!

Stayed here on the 14th Feb . The staff were helpful but the hotel seems very unloved at the moment. Room was dirty, tiles in bathroom cracked, dirty marks on ceiling, wood panel hanging off around hot tub . Ash trays outside full of tab ends not that I smoke but did notice it . One bottle of water in fridge when stopping as a couple and for the price we paid wasnโt good enough.waitress when we went for breakfast said they were only doing full English breakfasts that me and the wife did not want . Ended up with scrambled eggs on toast with a bit of bacon on top . Ask for a latte with breakfast and got a bog standard coffee at best . Dinning area was blowing cold air in on a cold morning. So to sum up wasnโt the best stay and certainly not worth the money I paid .

I arrived to welcoming, super friendly receptionist and was instantly made to feel at home! Luckily, there were also able to offer me an upgrade on the day to the penthouse (which I would highly recommend booking - its fabulous!). After a 5 hour journey from London, the freestanding bath and delicious hot cooked breakfast in the morning were a great! Thanks to the brilliant chef, June and her lovely colleague Alex. You made this stay very special, relaxing and memorable. I felt fully recharged and rested! This boutique has a really homely feel to it and I would definitely stay again.

Excellent stay. Room was top notch and the service was fantastic. Staff gave us lots of recommendations on what to do in the city. Breakfast was just as lovely. Just a 5 min walk from the city centre and the bars and restaurants. We shall be back next month for the same again

Very impressed by the front of house staff who were extremely friendly and welcoming. The hotel looked as though it was once very elegant and worthy of 5 stars but now needs some TLC as it is looking a little tired and in need of some of the expected finishing touches - for example fluffy towels and a selection of teas and coffee. A hairdryer in the room would have also been appreciated. It will be nice to see the renovations that the new owners has planned and we would return if these are completed to bring the hotel up to a good standard.

We love it here! Second time we have come to stay. They are so nice and the location is perfect for downtown and the campus. My favorite part is the out of the box style of the rooms, they are whimsical and comfortable. For each trip I make back to Durham, I plan to stay in a different room, to try them all out.
