I have never stopped overnight at the Avenue and lodge, so this is why I have not rated that part, but I have had a meal and a drink there. We held my sisters wake there last year and their catering was really good. I have also eaten Sunday lunch there and the food is excellent there. The staff are very nice and always helpful.

Popped in for a Sunday Dinner and was actually blown away! 3 meats, proper mash, loads of veg and it was hot. Lovely local venue I had no idea existed. Children welcome. Live sports. Great selection of drinks at the bar. Happy staff. Clean. What's not to like?

The staff are very friendly and the location is good - c. 20 mins by car/taxi to the city centre.

However, the rooms are really not passable, even at this price. The bed sheets conceal mouldy mattresses; the windows harbour mould; the bathrooms are ridden with mould and other signs of poor cleaning, and they smell foul, which is no surprise given that the shower cubicles are not watertight and there's no working ventilation.

There are some nice touches - ample towels, complimentary chocolates, mints, and shampoos, and a working TV (albeit with iffy signal). The hotel is also in a very quiet area - always a plus, especially if you're travelling for work.

Overall, though, there are too many basic failings for anything longer than a one-night stay to be bearable. It is a shame because just a little investment of time and money would easily bring the place up to a much more comfortable standard. At the moment, it's definitely not 3-star.

Feared for my safety!! |I had to visit Birmingham for personal reasons. |Stayed for 1hr at The Avenue and club. It was so bad that I left. Upon arriving the place smelled of drugs, loud men standing around drinking playing pool looking me up and down.The room was disgusting. Mould and hairs in the shower, no double lock on the door, door lock was broken, shower had not been cleaned, cobwebs hanging down the wall, poo marks in the showers, no mattress protector, |I am a single woman on my own and I did not feel safe there at all. Do not book this place! Went and stayed in much more respectable well known chains of hotels for the night.

We reserved an event and when we asked if we can arrived a bit earlier to decorate, they advised us that we can made it at 2. But when we arrived, the room is not clean and there's a maintenance stuff in the room. During the event, the old lady stuff, starting complaining about the music, throwing bottles very hardly and the most annoying there's an exit to smoke at the side of the room and she told us rudely that we can go there.
I'm not recommending this venue to reserve for any events if having the stuff cery rude and not well prepared to give a good service for they're clients.

The smell of cigarettes and mould hits you within seconds. Pretty grim place. Friendly people, friendly reception lady. ||Twin room. Holes in the wall, filthy carpet, filthy bathroom. |MOULD EVERYWHERE in the bathroom. Window didn't open, extractor fan doesn't work. |Toilet was clean. |Bedroom area- cobwebs everywhere. Dirty marks on the walls, ripped wall paper. Room was freezing (had to sleep with window wide open) smell of mould. |Clean bedding. Bed lumpy but ok. I didn't dare look under the sheet. |I slept in my clothes. Didn't use bathroom. Got up at 7am and left early. |Only stayed the might because arrived at 10pm. |Woke with a tight chest. Clothes smelt musty. Had a headache. |The worse place I've ever stayed. Surely this place isn't inspected?! |Very cheap but honestly not worth it even if was free. It I had my car with me I would have stayed in the car! |Taxi driver couldn't believe I stayed there!

The lady on the check in desk was really lovely, super pleasant and talkative, no fault with her.

Despite this, this room was not to a standard to be expected from a 3 star hotel. Holes in the walls and the door to the bathroom, wet floor in the bathroom, strong smell of cigarettes in the bathroom and mould covering the ceiling and all throughout the shower. Mirrors weren’t cleaned as there was a clear imprint of someone’s lips and nose in the centre of the mirror.

They provided towels and complimentary body wash but due to the state of the bathroom, we were not willing to use these complimentary items out.

The room wasn't refreshed for ages. Mould in the shower cabin and ceiling. The carpet was old, well used. Needs general refurbishment.
