The hotel was worn and dirty. The room we were allocated was not fit for purpose and the furnishings stained and dust covered. The bed sheet had hairs on it and when we examined the mattress it was absolutely covered in large bodily fluid stains, hairs and crumbs. There was no mattress protector. It was utterly disgusting!! The headboard was stained with head grease as were the arms on the seat. The tops of most items were covered in a thick layer of dust. One of the lights in the bathroom flickered on and off. We obtained a refund and left. This hotel is a disgrace and has no right having a 4 * rating. I have reported the matter to Bristol Council who have contacted this hotel and apparently they have conducted a deep clean of the room as a result. Shame it takes contact from the authorities to carry out basic hygiene work ! Absolutely shameful !!!!!

Booked 3 rooms for family for my son’s graduation. Lovely hotel. Rooms very comfortable. Great night’s sleep. Good selection of teas and coffees plus biscuits and fruit in the rooms. Nice seating area downstairs for guests. Staff - Sarah and Bridget - were very welcoming and helpful. |Highly recommend!

Really lovely hotel in an historic building. Very friendly staff. The room I stayed in had a nice big tub and minifridge. There was also coffee and loose leaf tea. Additionally they had complimentary fruit and sherry, what a wonderful welcome! The area is quite quiet but not too far from restaurants and shops.

I had a problem with my room and staff could not do enough to rectify it. They were polite and cheerful and went above and beyond to ensure I got another room which was excellent. With reasonably priced parking and a short walk to the city centre, I can't recommend this hotel too highly.

I had a lovely one night stay at this hotel on a weekend.

The single room was excellently facilitated, clean and tidy. My room (14), had a single bed, many plug points, a TV, a mini-bar, a desk, teapot and kettle, free sherry, a shower/bath, a sink, toilet and towel rack. Plus the rooms aren't too expensive if you book in advance.

The front desk had staff the 3 times I went by. The staff were friendly and assisted me promptly. In terms of location, this hotel could not be more well-placed, it's at the top of par row and it's a 5 minute walk from city centre.

Good things: lovely view across the park. 24 hour reception. Room was clean. Real milk for tea/coffee. Great location for University.

Bad things: when I book a 4 star hotel I expect more than the above. My room had no heating (radiator was turned off and didn't have a thermostat on. Wall thermostat controlled only bathroom towel rail) so reception ended up bringing me their fan heater. 15 mins of that and the room was warm enough for the rest of the night. No idea what happens if someone else had needed it.

The electrics in the bathroom look dodgy and speak to the overall tired and ready for refurb state of the room as a whole which has heavily scuffed walls, ancient radiator, fraying carpet edges and generally looks like it hasn't been touched in 20 years.

The worst: my single bed had an ancient, broken mattress on it. The sort of thing you don't realise until 2am when your back hurts and you keep getting stuck in the hole in the middle. If you can see a depression that big (in photos) when nobody is laying on it, imagine how bad it is when you're in it.

I'm appalled they are charging the prices they are for such a tired, broken old room.

The room was nice — spacious, a nice layout, and little touches like free fruit were lovely.

We had a lower deck premium room — number four to be precise. This room suffered from several issues. It’s positioned on the lower ground floor, so you’re below the main entrance and bar area and on the same level as the customer toilets. Several Christmas parties were going on, so we could clearly hear pounding music until midnight and were close enough to the bathrooms that we could hear the hand dryers being used through the walls.

Outside our window was their terrace bar, which was filled with people until gone 10pm. On three separate occasions, somebody stood directly outside our window to have a conversation. They sounded like they were in the room with us.

None of these are a problem in their own right. Hotels have bars, other patrons, and can have noisy moments. That’s part of the whole package. My problem is that they think it’s a good idea to put a room, effectively, between an outdoor bar and an indoor toilet.

Finally, going back to the room: in our bathroom, the shower screen leaked and left a large puddle on the floor, there was the beginnings of black mould on the ceiling, and the shower kept falling out of its holder due to being too bulky.

Overall, it’s a nice hotel and I’m sure other rooms are lovely to stay in. Room four on the lower ground floor is not. I hope you don’t draw the short straw when you get your key.
