We were initially booked into another hotel but were so disappointed with the room that we immediately checked out and chose The Castle, having dined there and enjoyed their BBQs in the past, though we had never stayed. The room was perfect, full of character. The staff were very friendly yet absolutely professional. The breakfasts are second to none. Location-wise, it's in the centre of Taunton—can't beat that. Not cheap, but definitely worth it for a couple of days.

We stayed for one night for my birthday and overall it was a nice experience. I appreciated the birthday note in our room. The whole building does feel like it needs a refresh as it felt quite dated and in places crumbly. The staff were friendly and helpful but forgot to tell us when check out was so we had to spend a bit of time finding the information.
Location is great if you're looking for a spot close to the action in town.
We found that the radiator in the bathroom wasn't able to be turned off and made the room very hot so a better heating control would've been appreciated.

I love it here!! This is our second time staying and we absolutely looooove! The staff are always so welcoming and friendly and are always up for a chat it makes it so much nicer. The room we stayed in was overlooking the car park on a Saturday night so naturally of course there will be noise, reading some previous reviews I think people forget they’re booking a hotel right in the town. The staff are so helpful should you have any issues and extremely attentive. We will be sure be back, thank you castle for another stay❤️

I first stayed at The Castle with my family about 20 years ago and it was marvelous. I've stayed several more times over the years and watched this wonderful old hotel slip in service and quality. It is quite sad to see the deterioration of the gardens and dining facilities.||The dining room, where afternoon tea is now served, was also used for breakfast. You could get a full english breakfast served at your table. Today the dining room is less than useless; it is sterile and uninviting. Breakfast is a buffet affair that simply does not measure up. They once had. a Michelin chef but he left to open his own restaurant by the name of Augustas. (Well worth making a reservation; the food was superb.)||I could go on but the hotel simply must improve if it expects guests to return, especially at the prices they charge. This is at most a 3 star hotel charging 5 star prices.

Our rooms were of good size across the group of us staying, very clean and well presented. Breakfasts ticked all the right boxes nicely. Afternoon Tea was excellent and so was the Mendip Menu and we would highly recommend this hotel as a Wedding Venue as the event organisers and staff are second to none for professionality, friendliness, helpfulness and politeness.

Hotel stay - it was a nice old fashioned hotel with a spacious and comfy room. The only thing missing was a fridge in the room and aircon. ||Breakfast was nice but didn’t change daily. Nice selection of to-order breakfast items though. ||Afternoon tea - one of the best afternoon teas I have had. It exceeded all expectations. Every element of the food was at par with any five star London hotel. The service was polite and unobtrusive.

Whilst the outside of the building is quite amazing to look at when you arrive, the internal decoration requires modernisation. I stayed in a single room for one night and it was clean and functional. Checkin and check out were both easy and all of staff encountered were friendly. The hotel advertise events and Christmas celebrations- see photos.

Stayed at hotel for 1 night and this was by far the worst hotel stay I've ever had. I travel a lot for work and have stayed at The Castle previously so I had an idea of what to expect. It's a little dated but central and close to where I needed to be.

As I type this, I'm sitting in the room and hardly slept because of a horrible whooshing sound in the next room, like a washing machine or pump of some sort. Let's not forget the creaky floors upstairs which are not my neighbour's fault really.
Eventually called reception around 5:30am about the whooshing noise and the gentleman said there shouldn't be a noise. He offered to come up and listen to investigate and I took him up on the offer. This was mostly so no one else goes through a sleepless night. He said he would be "2 minutes" and he never showed up!

Now, I don't know much about hospitality but I do know that it's not an easy job so I am always polite and try to be understanding. When I do have an issue, I like that to be resolved, especially when there's money in exchange for a service. When my concerns are disregarded, it leaves me with no choice but to warn others as I am doing now. DO Not stay at this hotel if you want a good night's sleep. Stay at a bland chain hotel or a B&B because I can promise you that the rooms and service will be a lot better than this place.

I usually stay with a team. Thankfully, I'm travelling alone on this occasion. I can certainly say this will be the last time I or any of the team will stay here.
Such a shame really because, small hotels like this are worth supporting but The Castle have not made it easy to support. I hope they'll have better luck with someone else.
