We stayed at the Fox and Hounds last weekend and have to say it was excellent. We were made to feel so welcome from the very start and nothing was too much trouble, all the staff were friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately for personal reasons we had to leave early which was a great regret but again the staff were very helpful with all our needs and we will definitely be returning.
The food was excellent both at breakfast and also dining in the evening. The menu had a good choice and everything was perfectly cooked.
We had a cream tea one afternoon which again was excellent. I wish the scones I bake would rise like that and be so light!
Many thanks again F&Hs!

Second visit at this lovely Hotel with our dog. Very good food for evening meal, breakfast was a great selection, the hot buffet selection was excellent, just needed to be hotter ! Lovely walk at the back of the property. I did feel for the two ladies serving in the evening, it was only those two and they were so busy, did a good job tho. Our room was no 24, huge room and lovely bathroom, mattres is need of a change as it is very thin and uncomfortable. We will visit again during the warmer weather as it is lovely to sit outside on the terrace.

We were so happy with our stay here, and wished we could have extended it beyond one night. We were made so welcome from the moment we stepped into the reception, with one of the owners making us feel right at home. The best bit about our stay was how dog friendly the hotel, restaurant and grounds are. Our furry family members were made as welcome as we were with generous touches like dog towels and treats in the communal areas, and branded biscuit and bowl in the bedroom.
The rooms were comfortable and well appointed with some lovely original features such as the ornate radiator and high ceilings. The grounds were perfect for exploring and most of the routes are on marked paths which is great for accessibility.
The food in the adjoining restaurant was delicious and good value. The breakfast was served in the dining room which felt a little disjointed as it was more like a thoroughfare from the bedrooms to the reception. Portions were very generous and the service was attentive. We also enjoyed afternoon tea as part of our booking, which offered a good selection of treats and choice of hot drinks.
All in all it was a great stay and perfect hospitality - thank you!

We have just returned from a 5 day Christmas break, staying at The Fox and Hounds Country Hotel, in Chulmleigh Devon.|Having never stayed away at Christmas, we did not know what to expect. We were booked into The Heywood Suite, that has a mini kitchenette, shower room, king size bed, a secluded corner with a lovely big bath and entrance to decking and exercise gardens. The room was beautifully decorated and provisions were provided, we had our own Christmas Tree, and all provisions provided for us. Breakfast was a continental affair, with everything you could want or wish for, to help your self to. Christmas Day dinner was served in a lovely conservatory decorated and laid out lovely. Food was hot and was expertly prepared . Boxing Day was a buffet and cream tea in the afternoon, melt in the mouth scones, all laid out in the bar/lounge area, with a fire alight. I need to mention, this is a very dog friendly hotel, and it was lovely to meet so many other dog owners with their dogs. I have to say Tom and his team were absolutely amazing, nothing too much trouble and organised to perfection. |They will provide you with maps for walking in the areas, and give you good local knowledge to help your stay there. |The team were so friendly, polite and always smiling, you have to appreciate they were working when we were enjoying Christmas, so a huge shout out to them, Well Done ! You were all amazing. The Hotel is in lovely grounds and the locals visit the pub/restaurant regularly chatting and spending time with visitors there, it has a lovely homely feel, and always welcoming. There is also a Tree House in the grounds you can stay in, which is also dog friendly. The hotel is listed in some parts and is beautiful , and genuinely decorated to appreciate the period of the building. |I would definitely recommend a break here, at any time of the year, and we will be returning soon

Only went for a Sunday meal here so can not comment on the accommodation. Pleasant place, nice bar area to wait in before the meal, good selection of drinks and nice woodburner in corner to keep area warm. Restaurant very nice with good seating. Sunday lunch is a carvery type meal with your selection of meat being carved for you and then a very, very good selection of various veg to help yourself to. All was cooked to perfection. Well worth a try if you are in the area.

Went for a meal last night for a small celebration and having not been for almost 9 years, we were treated to a superb atmosphere with dogs welcome by all and service that was superb. The food was really delicious the salmon starter and pork tenderloin was sublime, not to mention the Pana cotta which was perfect. Mathew and all the staff made us very welcome and will definitely be returning for more delights with friends very shortly. Thank you all for a lovely evening.

We spent 2 nights in the most magical treehouse. Our stay was perfection. The treehouse was warm, clean, luxurious, peaceful. We enjoyed sitting outside at the handmade tables & chairs. The view from every window was stunning. A large area around the treehouse includes a pond and BBQ area, it's all fenced off so is private.|There's a railway line nearby but the trains are infrequent, we enjoyed the sound of the trains going past.|Our young children loved their room with bunkbeds - very fun!|The beds are very comfortable. I loved the masterbed. Lying next to the window with views of the trees and reading my book was bliss.|We all enjoyed the huge copper bath! Great to have a bath and a shower.|We had lunch at the restaurant which was delicious.

We have recently taken on a puppy, both of us in our late seventies. Accepting that this move would make going on holiday virtually impossible, we were surprised when visiting our local Pets at Home store to be recommended the Fox&Hounds,Eggesford, Chumleigh, in mid-Devon. What a find! From our first greeting at their reception to our final goodbye, we all had a very good experience. Our room, no. 19, on the ground floor was enormous, with twin double beds, ensuite, and a welcome terrace to enjoy our late evening glasses of wine. Our puppy, Bonnie, aged 6 months, slept peacefully for 12 hours each night, in her cage, in an alcove. She was also allowed to join us in the vast, but cosy, dining area. All the tables had adequate spacing, so that each of the dogs could socialise without too much drama. This worked quite well, until Bonnie decided to ambush some of the wait staff, carrying their food to adjacent tables. Not good, so banned by us until we had dined. The hotel grounds are an interesting mix, with a spacious exercise area, through an underpass under a railway, to the bank's of the river Taw, of Tarka the Otter fame. We passed an intriguing tree house on our way. There are two very good forest walks a short drive away, free to enter courtesy Forestry Commission. We dined each evening at the hotel, enjoying working our way through the ample and delicious menu choice. Our four days and nights at the hotel, all meals and drinks included came to ÂŖ1100, great value for our first sortie with our bonny dog.
