We had Sunday lunch in the Oak room today. The staff were great. The beef was amazing. The rest of the food was lovely. The dining room was a bit cool but warmed up. For us, it’s not somewhere we can afford to go to very often but, as it was my husbands birthday it was a lovely treat. Reading all the negative comments re staff we were apprehensive but we didn’t have any problem at all.

We went to the Garden Restaurant and sat amongst the lovely trees, shrubs and orchids, never been to a Restaurant in the UK quite like this- The menu is extensive, we chose cheese fritters with a delicious sauce to start, they were absolutely mouthwatering, that was followed by Lamp chops with special potatoes and vegetables, pink and melt in your mouth tender-- A tasty Xmas pudding followed with brandy sauce. We had one one of those rare meals, when you were sad it was over. The staff were very efficient and friendly-- The downside as previously mentioned in other reports, it did seem on the expensive side, definitely not the place to go if you are on a budget. Suggest you save up, put the cost to one side and simply enjoy. the moment-- You can see they have high overheads , therefore it will never be a bargain , or maybe depending on how you look at things,, even value for money- But without doubt if you would like to spoil yourself and higher prices are not an issue, then this is the place to go.

This was a special romantic getaway just before Christmas. My boyfriend booked a four poster bedroom. Beautiful bed but the room looked too modern for it. The bathroom was lovely. Only difficulty was getting in and out of the bath as there were no grab handles and you kept slipping back into it which was quite funny for us but could pose a safety hazard for someone with mobility issues.
The restaurant setting was nice but the scallops were undercooked and the pork with prosciutto ham and cream looked like a pile of sick on the plate. I mentioned both of these things to the waitress as you pay a lot of money for this. She did say that I wasn’t the first person to mention the pork dish and that the chef would be looking at how to present it differently! We asked for an Irish floater coffee. It was awful. It was basically strong coffee with no whiskey and cream. They need to learn how to make a floater coffee! The actual restaurant experience was lovely with attentive staff.

Yesterday my wife & I stayed o/night at the George & also had a delicious meal in the oak room. The hotel is dressed for Christmas but still maintains that grand elegance & old world charm. As always the service was friendly, warm & welcoming. We have been visiting the George for many years now & love the chance to dress up, when having our meal & being made to feel special. All the staff were helpful but a special mention to James , who cooked our crepes & recommended a superb bottle of Gavi Gavi, to have with them. Thanks again and we’ll see you in the new year

Rude awful attitude.
We visited three restaurants this bank holiday weekend. This was the first, from which things could and did only get much better.
The senior staff consisting of two females and a male (that appeared to be the male owner / manager, a female behind the bar and a female serving) appeared indignant, irritable and at times, on the edge of exploding with rage. We felt uncomfortable and unwelcome during the entire lunch experience.
It started with rather curt and abrupt order taking from who may have been the male manager/ owner. The finale was when on leaving, our daughter paused to rearrange her jacket causing a female senior member of staff to temporarily wait who was walking behind carrying a plate. The lady stood with a tight lipped aggressive scowl. I quickly noticed, so asked my daughter to move out the way to let the lady get past, who appeared on the verge of exploding with rage. The lady passed by with no acknowledgment, even though I tried to be kind by acknowledging she had been held up. Not the end of the world, but this was another example of the senior staff attitude.

The food was expensive and average. In fairness, the junior members of staff were really nice and a complete contrast to the three senior members of the team who were simply rude.

I/we have visited, stayed and eaten at the George over more than 25 years. It is the most beautiful building, very well preserved and with delightful ambience. |We stayed overnight on Christmas Eve and had Christmas lunch, it was very good but expensive. |Overall, I think the staff did an excellent job but did make a significant mistake during Christmas lunch, which a place charging the prices the George does (£450 bill for 2) isn’t acceptable|The lamb that I ordered was carved at the table and I could see from the off that it was completely uncooked on the inside. It should of course be pink but it was more green / grey in colour. I cook a lot myself and realised it was close to ‘raw’ and had not been properly prepared so asked for it to be changed for Turkey (as my partner had already been served) and which was already in a heated silver platter beside the next table. The waitress said it would take too long for the turkey to be served (!?) so she would get the lamb sorted out and back to the table quickly. I was a bit bemused and should’ve insisted there and then on the turkey because when the lamb did come back, 10 minutes later, it was as tough as old boots and dark brown. By this time I was quite cross and insisted on them bringing the turkey and changing my partner’s meal to a fresh one so that we could enjoy eating them together. ||When I did get the turkey, it was the end part of the bird and so the bits were pretty small - although excellent in flavour and texture. The other courses were all superb and the wines too. I should point out at this juncture that the GM did intervene in the restaurant to make sure that my partner’s food was served at the same time. However, quite how the kitchen could produce two absolutely awful portions of lamb, one immediately after the other is a complete mystery to me and unacceptable given the price charged. ||It was incredibly busy, and so I didn’t complain to the GM, who was charging around doing a great job. There are definitely lessons to be learned here when something like this happens and I was left feeling disappointed. However, the quality of the service overall, and the loveliness of the George rescued the stay.

We didn't stay here our stop was mainly for dinner. We had our dinner in one of their food areas called " The Garden Room" which is a less formal restaurant but still offers a comfortable setting for dining. We went for dinner in mid November and the restaurant was decorated with Christmas trees and lights which was a good touch. Service was great and staff always made sure we got everything that we needed. We ordered fish pie and sea bass which was well cooked and delicious. For dessert we had sticky toffee pudding and cream caramel which was okay. I found dessert quite expensive but what was given. Once you pay higher value you expect some decorations or added value food.
Overall I enjoyed it.
