Staff couldn't do enough for us but when we got into our room there was no heating. There had been a problem with the heating but it came on after an hour or so. Cups in our room for hot drinks had no handles. Not great for the elderly. Had difficulty with locking the door to our room but got the hang of it eventually. Our room window looked out on the road through the village so we were bothered by noise of cars a little. Breakfast unusual and not entirely to our taste whereas the tasting menu of our evening meal the night before in the Hjem restaurant was expensive but exquisite.

We did not know what to expect from this hotel when booking, especially when the adverts promote the Michelin star restaurant. Also, the outside picture looked grubby and it's on a reasonably busy road. ||On arrival, there was ample parking albeit that reception was not clearly marked. Once we entered, the welcome desk was small but suitable for the ambience of the hotel / restaurant.||Our room was a revelation. It was everything I like in hotel accommodation. Clean, simple, uncluttered with modern furniture and appliances in both the bedroom and en suite.||We ate out due to the cost of the M* menu. Would have been nice to eat in if we weren't on a walk the Wall budget. We did have a very reasonably priced drink in the light and airy bar.||Next day we were absolutely amazed by the wonderful breakfast. (Probably one of the best I've ever had). Care and attention had been taken over the offer which included locally produced items like breakfast pie and individual bread. This meal, along with the attentive and pleasant staff, is the reason why this hotel gets and excellent rating from me.

The beds were comfortable, bathroom was clean and nice.
The restaurant had great dinner meal choices. Really yummy pie! The gin choices are fantastic too.
Staff were super lovely and helpful.
They even sorted out the heating in our room when I complained it was very cold.
The drying room was useful too for our wet clothes.
The breakfast had a limited choice and no fresh fruit on offer. But the juices were delicious.
Would stay again.

Stayed here for a night, ate dinner in the pub side of the hotel, and had breakfast. Couldn't fault our stay. The hotel rooms are very well furnished, plain but modern. Comfortable bedding. Breakfast was fantastic, and very high quality fresh food with plenty of choice. Proper coffee and excellent service. Finally, dinner was excellent. Staff were very friendly, great choice of food, and even had a vegan menu. Would happily return!

One night stay walking the Hadrian's Wall path. Not too far off the trail and a welcome sight. The Hotel is much nicer inside than from the outside, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was big and comfortable and the bathroom likewise. All very clean and well looked after.||||The 'bar' is much more a restaurant than a pub. Very nicely furnished and used by many of the diners at the adjoining 'fine dining' Michelin starred restaurant. The food was much better than the usual 'gastro-pub' fare and on balance not bad value for money given the quality. We decided to treat ourselves, and we were glad we did as it was the best meal we had during our week long walk.||||Bed comfy and had a great nights sleep. Breakfast was very good, and staff again really helpful and accommodating. Recommended.

My first visit for well over three years and well after the new owners took on ownership. It was warm and we were very warmly welcomed too. We were tempted by quite a number of items on the menu but three of us decided on two blackboard specials (both delicious) and two of us from menu items (both buns a touch overdone but enjoyed nonetheless). Good service made for a really enjoyable lunch and we shall definitely be back. This place has been transformed and it has been greatly improved.

We had a superb meal this afternoon. Clearly a popular place it was rammed but the staff made us feel really welcome. We had 3 children with us who were welcomed. Food was superb. I had lamb, my wife had chicken, the children. Excellent meals. Good real ales from the twice brewed brew house. All reasonable price. Venue is excellent. Tastefully decorated seating situated so you don't feel you are sat on someone's lap.

Staff couldn't do enough. I always tip 10% but the staff were worth 15%.

It was nice seeing the chef in the restaurant. He was knowledgeable, friendly and had a clear passion about the restaurant.

In summary, great venue, great staff, great food

Room (number 1) very cosy, with a bath (brilliant after a days walking). Staff were lovely and very sweet to our small dog, who was allowed in the bar area and given various treats etc. Food was delicious, a definite cut above the usual bar food. This might not suit everyone, as it was pricier than your average pie and chip bar fare, but because it was so nice, we didn't mind at all. The huge problem for us was the sound of lorries thundering along the road in the middle of night. Not sure if this is always a problem, or whether there was some lorry convention they were all heading for, but it kept us awake, even with ear plugs. So try and get a room at the back of the hotel.
