We visited here a few years ago and really enjoyed it so decided to come back. We were looking forward to the fine dining experience we had previously. We were booked in for two nights, dinner, bed and breakfast. First night we went to the lovely restaurant hoping to be shown to our table. Unfortunately, due to lack of staff we were told we’d be dining in the basement area where the bar is situated. Basic seating and basic food. Disappointing. We mentioned that it was our anniversary the following day and asked if we could eat in the main restaurant. It was agreed we could. Next evening we went to the restaurant. There was no staff there or at reception. We found staff in the basement restaurant. They told us we were eating upstairs in the main restaurant and showed us to our table. There were no other diners. We ordered our food. Very poor quality and didn’t eat it. A pleasant member of staff apologised. The breakfast in the main restaurant was good. Accommodation was ok but we noted lots of areas are looking “tired”. We were told the property had been taken over with new owners last year. We did make our complaint to the receptionist when we checked out and she arranged for us to receive a refund for our meal on the second night, which we appreciated. The pub grub food appeared to be justified by the fact that Judges Lodgings is not a hotel but an Inn. This was not an issue on our first visit when the food was excellent. Unfortunately we would not return here and couldn’t recommend it either.

As someone who works in the hotel industry, I usually prefer to give feedback directly rather than leave a negative review—but this experience left me no choice.

We arrived around midnight after a long drive, only to find every door locked and no one at reception. We spent over 30 minutes knocking on windows and doors before someone finally came out—not to apologize, but to scold us for “waking up the guests.” No recognition that we were also guests, locked out in the cold after paying £170 for a room.

The room itself was located in a separate building, accessed via what felt like a bunker. It resembled a budget beach bungalow more than a 5-star boutique hotel, which is how the property describes itself.

We wanted to switch to a better room but—unsurprisingly—no one was available at reception, so we were stuck.

The next morning, we were told we couldn’t have breakfast in the bright upstairs dining room because we hadn’t included breakfast in our booking. Instead, we were sent to eat in a dark basement area, while the main room sat half-empty.

When I asked why no one was expecting us, the staff said we “should have called.” It didn’t seem to occur to them that international guests might not have a UK SIM card.

To summarize: the building is charming, and the decor is stylish—but the service is shockingly poor, and the staff are dismissive at best. I suggest coming for a quick look if you’re nearby, but absolutely do not stay here overnight.

This is the second time we stayed at the hotel and it wont be the last. Location wise its brilliant, just a short walk from the main car park, through the Museum Gardens right to the hotel. The building is lovely and the rooms are fabulous. Literally the best bed I have ever slept in. Remarkably quiet as well given the central location. Breakfast was amazing. Big shout out to Aga (apologies if that isn't spelt right) what a lovely and friendly lady!

Every time we come to York we wouldn't stay anywhere else, the rooms are always immaculate, the staff are always at hand and do polite, the food is outstanding, we came on the 23rd may for out daughters birthday, and she had an amazing time. We stayed in the room 3 and it's was superb, we had free slippers, biscuits, and sweets left in our room for us, this is our 4th visit to the inn and cannot wait ti come again. Thank you so much.

Service was really good, ladies we're lovely.
Food was average. Portions we're not not good. I had the Lamb stew, which I sent back because it only had 3 small bits of Lamb in it. They did rectify this with 5 bits of Lamb. Shame really as the place was lovely.

Myself and my boyfriend popped in for a drink and decided to have a snack too.|The staff were friendly and helpful. I can only comment on the snack we had, chips and onion rings, but they were very tasty. We will definitely be back, next time we visit York.

My family and I went to the Judge’s Lodging for dinner at the end of April. I had made a reservation for 7pm but we got there 30 mins early and they were more than happy to seat us. The Manager, Sam, was our server and she was an absolute delight. We only had 1 day in York and she gave us the best tips for activities and places for drinks (other than here of course!) Sam was one of the most personable and friendly servers I’ve dealt with in a very long time. The food was also very delicious. Next time I’m in York, I will definitely come back.

We stay here several times a year and wouldn't stay anywhere else when visiting York. Beautifully kept historic building. Rooms are always spotlessly clean. Good food and lovely to sit outside when a nice sunny day! Staff are amazing, always warm and friendly which adds to a perfect stay.
