My wife and I visited for lunch on a day trip to Portsmouth as we saw a sign for Sunday roast. The member of staff said it was normally booked up but found a smaller table which was fine for us. The meal arrived promptly, was hot, a good size portion with a good choice of veg and plenty of roast potatoes. We found the staff very friendly and the meal and drinks were good value.

We didn’t rent a room here so I can’t comment on their condition. We tried to order food at 2:25PM and although the menu on the table clearly states that the kitchen is open until 3:00PM we were told “that’s an old menu”.
We had planned on eating and as such had already purchased a couple of pints 🍻, so we finished those and moved on.
I otherwise liked the pub’s authenticity as it was full of locals having a good time.
I would recommend asking if the kitchen is open before you order drinks if you’re expecting to eat.
The pub is conveniently located to several Inns and the train station.
There’s limited seats, consisting of booths and tables.

Really good staff. Very friendly.
Yeah, looks a bit intimidating from outside. Go past that.
Why one star drop?
This is the home of the Navy.
No Woods 100. No Pusser's rum.
Come on! Get Navy Rum in!

First the good parts. Excellent location for Mary Rose and the rest of the historic dockyards, right by Isle of white ferry and train station and spinnaker tower.
On the other hand the pub only serves food at lunchtime and despite what the instructions say check in is at the Keplple Head hotel 2 doors down.
The room was sparsely furnished with no reading light and a blind instead of curtains.
The parking next to the B& B is only for residents of the Kepple Head Hotel and so you have to street park with a permit you buy from reception

Worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The room was absolutely filthy, covered in thick dust, there was mold everywhere in the bathroom and under the bed. The walls were damp and the paint was peeling off all over the floor. Bedding was dirty and smelt damp. Room was freezing, TV did not work. Room was above a pub and could hear people drunk arguing and swearing until the early hours. The door was insecure so was afraid for the safety of myself and my daughter. There are no plug sockets near a mirror so unable to do my hair and I had to balance the kettle on the window sill in order to boil it. Stay away at all costs, absolute health hazard.

Extremely rude and nosey bar lady dated Sunday 8th June, 2025, poor attitude and justifying the fact that it's her job to be nosey when I commented on the fact that its £11.20 for 2 pints and not eben being rude. The attitude from the bar lady was rude for her derisery comments 'if you dont like it go elsewhere' absoludely no need for that. Not satisfactory considering it's the customer's and community that keep pubs alive and staff employed.

Stayed 3 nights in February. Thought I was getting a bargain based on the comments, but turns out I was getting almost what I paid for. It's not a gastropub, they weren't doing dinners, and if you paid for breakfast you had to get it from a pub a few doors down. This may be seasonal but nothing said as such. The room was pretty stark without even a bedside lamp. Unfortunately it was also freezing cold with a tiny supplementary space heater that was way too small, the thinnest doonah I've seen and no extra blankets. I had a few drinks in the bar one night, but it was cold there too, so I gave it a miss after that.
On the upside, the bathroom was huge, there was lashings of hot water, big fluffy towels and a nice view.
It might have been worth what I paid otherwise, but nothing makes up for a night where it's too cold to sleep

Came here with my partner for one night. We first made our way through the pub, which was very lively (as expected) however we were also groped at and had strange comments made about us as we tried to get to our room. When we made our way in, it took 3 tries for the room to lock properly, but what we saw when we turned around was worse.

A mixture of dead flies, dust, and general dirt on the floor next to the bed was an interesting thing to be greeted with. The bedsheets had short, thick black hairs all over them, and there were stains on the bed runner and pillows.

Immediately took photos and took them to the reception of the Keppels Head, who to their credit were lovely and immediately switched us to one of their rooms. That was absolutely fine and clean, but the initial experience was enough that I am unable to give above 2 stars for it.
