Upon arrival at the Poole accommodation that my wife and I had originally booked (The Quay Hotel), we were marginally vexed to find that that hotel had shut down in the previous 48 hours. We had already sampled a few delicious beers from the copious selection of genuinely excellent hostelries in the vicinity; removing any option to drive away from the area. We did a quick internet search and noted that the Merchant House was a minute away. So we sauntered over and rang the doorbell. The gentleman that answered the door, David, could not have been more welcoming. What a friendly, caring, multi-talented host David is. Our room was superbly cosy with everything we could need. We had a great sleep. But David’s breakfast was next-level. The best coffee - with David’s own delicious twists on the Full English breakfast. Sir Bentley the dog is adorable. Our short unplanned stay at the Merchant House was a very comfortable and heart-warming experience. Wonderful.

Characterful hotel in good location in Poole, close to the quay and a convenient multi-storey carpark. My room was small and comfortable, with two windows and a fan, which were useful, given the hot weather. Kettle & tea in the room, and a well-sized shower room. Incredible vegan breakfast, which was better than I could have imagined (just request a few days prior)! Communications prior to arrival were hard, but lovely owners. Would absolutely recommend.

We visited the Merchant House for a couple of nights with my brother and sister in law. Our room was very small with no drawers or wardrobe for clothes and nowhere to put anything such as cases etc. The size of the en-suite bathroom was fine. However both were not cleaned properly with the standard in my opinion being far below that acceptable for guests. The grout and seal around the bathroom tiling was black in places. Skirting boards had not been cleaned for a long while and there was a general lack of attention to cleaning items such as bedside lamps and other areas. The heating was not working on the bathroom towel rail or on the bedroom radiator, which wasn’t ideal on a wet chilly October weekend. The room was not serviced during our two nights stay, the coffee tray was not replenished nor were the cups washed or the bed made up or bins emptied. In general the whole experience was one we would not wish to repeat and since this was not a low priced accommodation it was certainly not considered by us to be value for money.

Very cramped room with a bathroom that badly needs refurbishment and a good deep clean. Blackout blinds would be helpful given the location, near a car park and offices. The breakfast was ok, but a more simplified version but with more choice would be welcomed by many. Host is very friendly however.

Amazing stay, host was so generous, made a stressful trip stress free. Cooked an incredible breakfast for us, lovely room, stayed up late for us after we had been delayed. Would absolutely love to stay here again, highly recommend.

Excellent place to stay, the host David went out of his way to make us feel very welcome. He made an awesome breakfast with homemade sourdough bread - delicious. The bedrooms were lovely and the kitchen lace was a stones throw from the beach. I would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone going to Poole

I spent 2 very comfortable nights at Merchant House. As other reviewers have mentioned the rooms are compact but comfortable and have everything you need. David is an excellent host and has created a real home from home. I would definitely stay again.

A real find, very close to the quay at Poole. David is a charming and welcoming host. The accommodation was very nice and breakfast was excellent. I would definitely recommend a stay here. You won't be disappointed!
