The owner was happy to chat to all the customers, local or new visitors.|The logburner was a warm welcome on a cold evening. Books and games were available to use.|The menu was varied and good value and a choice of a smaller portion of lasagne at lunchtime was plenty for me with garlic bread and salad. My husband had the homemade, very meaty steak and ale pie with seasonal veg and chips which he enjoyed .|The bedroom was warm and cosy, very clean with comfortable bed and pillows.|

I have visited the phelips many times over the years and it remains one of my favourite spots! The team is great, friendly and welcoming owners and dog-friendly too.

Lovely menu that caters for vegetarians, vegans and coeliacs really well. The pub itself is really well maintained, with lovely atmosphere, board games, beer garden, cosy fire, and clean bathrooms.

I’ve also stayed in the accommodation before and had a lovely experience there too.

Nice 'country' pub. Warm welcome, cosy settee and chair by a lovely open fire.
Food good but could do better with the filling of Baguettes, bit stingey.
Landlady, friendly and welcoming. Would recommend, right next door to NT house.

What a perfect little find right next to Montacute House. Perfect place to stay for an overnight get away or short break.
Really clean rooms and very comfy beds above the bar/restaurant in the old inn. Some memorabilia of when Sense and Sensibility Sensibility was filmed in the village and amazing food!! The Pheilps Arms famous pie is incredible! Great value and delicious food. Breakfast was great too and your hosts (plus Trix the dog) are very welcoming and accommodating. I'd certainly stay again if in the area.

Really enjoyed my stay here - I had a single room with en suite which was very comfortable and immaculately clean. Delicious supper in the bar and excellent cooked breakfast in the morning. Really lovely staff. Location is great - Montacute village is beautiful and the National Trust house is just a short walk down the road. I’d definitely stay again.

We stayed here on our way down to Cornwall , but could have easily stayed longer. The service was ‘2nd to none!’ . Could not of wanted for more & nothing was too inconvenient, you only had to ask .. but we never had too ! The room was spacious and recently decorated . With thick lovely mattresses and plenty of fluffy pillows .
The pub itself was newly decorated and very welcoming with settees by the fire. The food was really tasty and good quality ; lots of meat and gravy in the meat pie & the lasagna was very nice with thick, garlic drenched slice of bread .. good portions .
They are very dog friendly with water bowls etc and offered us towels to dry our dog .
Really a great find ! Would recommend !
They also had the sport on TV .

A pleasure to eat here. Friendly service, great food and drink!

You can drop in for lunch but advisable to book. The small fish & chips sufficient for an adult lunch. Fantastic burger!
