A reasonably priced, quiet and clean hotel not far from the centre of Durham. I thought it might be noisy sleeping above a pub but it couldn’t have been quieter. The room was simply furnished but was comfortable, clean and had everything in it that I needed. The pub does not serve meals but not that far away is an excellent family run cafe that serves excellent breakfasts and lunches at a very reasonable price. Durham is very hilly so it would be a challenge walking to the historic centre might be hard for those who have problems walking but I enjoyed the exercise. Going downhill the river is only about 20 minutes away with its lovely walks and the town centre is small enough to be able to wander around easily. The cathedral and castle and gorgeous are the cathedral restaurant has quality food at a good price. I’d definitely visit Durham again and I would happily stay at the Queen’s Head pub.

Planned to stay for two nights to explore Durham and watch a band. On arrival it was clear the premises weren’t as described. There were broken windows, badly neglected external areas and rundown interior. The superior double room was tiny and had not been cleaned properly for a long time. We could write our name in the dust. The room was advertised with a bath but it didn’t have one and the street view was a view of a gable wall. We tried to persevere but on returning back at 10:30, the pub was blasting music out. This continued until half past twelve and the bar didn’t empty until 1am. The noise was deafening. We went to see staff in the morning but no one was available. We checked out after one day, left our keys and returned later but on two occasions no one answered the pub door. We have had telephone conversations with the pub manager but they refuse to refund us for the second night. It wrecked our weekend and we had to spend additional money for another hotel. The worst experience I’ve ever had in relation to hotels. Avoid at all cost.

AVOID!!!

What a shame, having stayed previously we wanted to give return business to this pub. Arrived and welcomed given key to room. That was the only thing good about our experience.
The bedroom we were in was a family room which had seen better days, the mattress on the double bed was broken. We requested a non smoking room but might as well have not bothered because the amount of smoke in the corridor that then came into the room was constant.

Bathroom was OK but very tired. The kitchenette should be condemned. Two fridges to use but not cleaned, when we stayed their was old mouldy food in both and they were just generally dirty.

Music from the bar was loud as they have changed into a sports bar which they do not list on online booking platforms.

I don't expect glamour for the cost we paid but I do expect a response from the owner. Sadly they have IGNORED all my emails as well as all the calls from the booking site to discuss our stay.

Such a shame

Avoid at all costs!|Book 2 nights in a superior room!! So bad we had to abandon and book elsewhere. The music from the bar was SO LOUD and didn't cease until 25 past midnight. Then the goodbyes and tidying up noise began for another 30 minutes. Didn't sleep a wink! Nobody available the following morning to discuss and no answer to calls or emails. Broken glass in car park, broken windows and the beer garden was 2 dirty broken and rotten wooden bench tables. DO Not Book to stay here!!!

I booked here a room for two nights. For the very modest price the room was surprisingly nice and the bed excellent. The only drawback is the music from the bar whose basses can hammer until well after midnight and the walls are thin. But otherwise highly recommended, parking is included and a bus stop just around the corner.

Good comfortable room, very pleasant staff, excellent value. Quite noisy in the early hours, and the music from the pub went very late.

Stayed there 1 night while we visited the cathedral and castle. Played pool with the locals and did the quiz later on. Good atmosphere and friendly staff. Mattress wasn’t cracking but the price for the stay was.

The description of this pub is inaccurate. On the website it states that it serves food which was one of the reasons we booked it but we were told that they didn’t. The staff were not at all approachable and the music was blaring until after midnight. I would not recommend this pub at all, was glad to leave.
