A great base for a walking holiday or for the first and last nights of a week of camping on the moor.

I have stayed here twice as the first night of wild-camping trips to Dartmoor in the past 10 years and have loved it every time. The rooms are comfortable and airy, the beds are not too soft, the food is excellent and the atmosphere is great.

This used to be more of a pub with rooms than a hotel, which is what I like. More like a traditional travellers' Inn than anything else.

I particularly recommend the breakfasts. Just what you need to fortify yourself before a hard day of walking.

Can’t fault this place.|Lovely warm welcome from reception after a long day’s walk. |Room great.. comfy bed, lots of space, airy and light|Had delicious refuelling supper of rump steak chips and peas and kitchen changed onion rings for a huge tomato which was appreciated|Got conned by Bill the owner into singing the karaoke in return for sponsorship.. didn’t know he ran the place but was lovely to chat to him and his friends ||Summary: friendly, good value for money, great food and thank you!

My room had a nice bed and towels, however it was very noisy with both road traffic and the (not sure what you call it) flan on the outside of the building from the kitchen.
My friend came to join me for breakfast, on the menu it stated £8.50 for non guest yet I was charged £10 for hers. Why?
Plus all we had was tea, toast and boiled eggs.
No offer of help to take my case up the stairs and I found this hard to do at my age.
Will not be back

Surprised to see bad reviews, but my guess is they have taken them on board. All.the food was very good, and I know my food!!! Burgers were amazing, though they should stick to breiosh buns and not make homemade ones. We had two starters as well, which were brilliant. I'd recommend anyone to revisit or give it a go.

They welcomed us in the morning and made a separate saloon available for us and catered really well for all of us including our friend who is a wheelchair user. Nothing was too much trouble and the Sunday lunch and other food was lovely. Also provided a lovely vegan lunch. Thank you

Here for an evening meal and Karaoke evening. The food was amazing, freshly cooked, hot and tasty. Our party had mostly fish and chips which had huge pieces of fish in crispy batter with a choice of mushy or garden peas. One of our party had the fish pie which was full to the brim with premium pieces of fish and was very filling. The lambs liver was also served to one of our party, it was cooked beautifully and the presentation was top class! The karaoke was such fun, the songs varied and all there had a good time. We would definitely recommend the sportsman’s for a great night out.

Firstly, the food is amazing. Staying here for a couple of weeks whilst working locally.
One of the best full English breakfasts I've had in a long while. The lasagne is out of this world. The staff work really hard here too make sure of a comfortable stay. Warm welcome, friendly patrons. Good beer!
