A stunning place, steeped in history, in beautiful grounds. This is the home of Sir David John Smith-Dodsworth, who greeted us on arrival and treated us like old friends. The house is fascinating, full of oil paintings of portraits of David's ancestors and people connected to the family going back to 1620. We relaxed in front of a log fire, sipping single malt from the honesty bar and browsing the family's collection of ancient books which went back to the 16th century. Our room was luxurious, clean and comfortable, service was efficient and friendly, and the breakfast was extremely generous. Staying here was an amazing experience, a privilege and a pleasure.

We spent two evenings at Thornton Watlass Hall and certainly hope to return. On ||arrival we were greeted by the hostess Liz and shown around her beautiful and interesting home, including our bedroom for the stay which was the Katherine Parr room. This room was large, clean, warm and comfortable with an ensuite bathroom. The breakfasts are amazing, cooked to perfection and more than enough to set you up for a full day of touring the area. I did wonder if we would feel relaxed in someone else's home but I can honestly say I have never felt more relaxed in a bed and breakfast establishment.|| A mention of the housekeeper Trish. A lovely lady who not only keeps the house spotlessly clean but has lived in the area all of her life, her mother was housekeeper of the Hall before her, and she has many wonderful tales of how the house was run over the years and knows much about the surrounding area.

David and Liz are welcoming. Trisha is the best housekeeper I have ever met. The house is clean and so comfortable. The history in this delightful home is second to none. The peace is out of this world. The countryside is so beautiful. I feel as comfortable as I would in my own home. I love looking at the pictures of the ancestors and wonder what their lives were like. There is no other place like it. I love every stay I have had Thornton Watlass.

We've stayed here several times, always at the end of our trips, and each time has been better than the one before. The Hall truly has a noble atmosphere that is steeped in history, yet is comfortable and friendly. We could be content staying on the grounds for the entire visit, but the location is also great for touring North Yorkshire.

We stayed at the Hall whilst visiting Yorkshire for my sister’s (covid-compliant) wedding. David, Liz and their staff could not have made us more welcome. We were the only guests at the time, but we were very well looked after. The family room was big and perfect for us. The massive cooked breakfast was a highlight for us all and the enormous fire in the sitting room welcomed us back to the Hall every night ... even though it was only for us! The Hall and grounds are incredible and we aim to return there as soon as we can! Definitely recommended!

This is our 10th visit in 6 years......an absolutely fantastic place. Liz and David are exceptional hosts and not forgetting Trish who always has a smile on her face.
A beautiful country ancestry house set in stunning 1500 acres parkland....a very welcoming and relaxing place to stay....and the Buck Inn, the local pub in the village is just a short walk away for a meal and a pint in the evening.

We spent two nights at the hall and endorse everything that has been said about staying there.A truly wonderful experience. From my own perspective as an antique dealer I was in my element as the hall is filled with so many treasures that I could spend a month there and still not see everything. Quite how the house is kept so clean and sparkling is a mystery and the gardens are immaculate. It is the attention to dtail that really impresses and Sir David could not have been more hospitable. Will certainly hope to return there again in the near future.

My wife is a BIG fan of the television series "Heartbeat" which we get in Canada, so of course while visiting Yorkshire this year, we had to stay here. We were fortunate to book the Katherine Parr room and the stately feel of the accommodations further added to the feeling of "staying @ Lord Ashfordly's home"... David met us upon arrival and happily showed us about his home, answering all my wife's questions and sharing further stories of filming for the Heartbeat series, while I enjoyed wandering the amazing gardens. We were provided an access code for the front gates so we could head out for an evening meal (the nearby Buck Inn is just a very short stroll away and the food, along with the friendly welcome from staff and patrons, is an indication of how our overall stay in the village of Thornton Watlass was - excellent). Our bed mattress was of superior quality, as were the pillows and linens, and we enjoyed a very good night's sleep, plus the home is extremely quiet! The full 4 piece bathroom (and living area of our room) had a wonderful view over the front grounds and David encouraged us to use the pool table and help ourselves to the honor bar in the library. Thornton Watlass Hall was like a living museum to us with family paintings and loads of interesting acquisitions that one could spend days and days perusing. We were delighted to see "Vicky" when we came down to the dining room for breakfast the next morning (we met Vicky at the nearby Buck Inn the previous evening) and she spoiled us with a breakfast spread fit for royalty. I personally enjoy staying @ "castle accommodations" during our holidays in Europe, while my wife enjoys visiting film locations featured in her favourite television shows, so we were both delighted with our stay @ Thornton Watlass Hall. Thank-you to all of you for your efforts in making us feel so welcome. Enjoy.
