Ye Spotted Dogge is more like an upscale guest house than a hotel, with a storied history dating back to the sixteenth century and 21st century upgrades that make it a pleasure to stay in. Each room is spacious and comfortable, though tall people should mind the beams in the ceiling! And the public spaces, particularly the bar and breakfast room, are just gorgeous. Best of all are the owners and staff who went out of their way to make our stay supremely comfortable and welcoming.

My husband was very set on visiting Portsmouth on a recent trip to England. I was so, so , but sure one has to be flexible ! I'm so glad we visited this most interesting place in southern England and I wish we had more time. Now, my review of Ye Spotted Dogge. It is the loveliest little inn , and the service was the best we experienced in our two week stay in England! Ian and Alex are delightful hosts, helping us with our luggage, telling us all about the history of the building and in general being super hosts. Our room was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious and well stocked. ||Breakfast was in the beautiful dining area and I would say the menu had an English/Italian bend , which was a first in our trip. Delicious! We would absolutely stay her again!

Personal service, excellent location, luxurious and unique rooms. For the best way to experience Portsmouth , and its surroundings, this Hite is a must. Ian and Alex give a wonderful history, will provide personal service beyond expectations, and ensure any stay is enjoyable.

The character of this old inn is off the scale in every nook and cranny. 15th century ships timbers and so much more. . So much amazing history thankfully preserved by Ian and credit to him and being so welcoming. | Too many places like this have been lost forever. The continental breakfast was grand and the bed...oh the bed in a lovely, spacious room. | Appreciate 12 o'clock checkout, rare these days with the aforementioned bed. Lastly I have to mention Alexei who came to England from Russia 20 years ago not speaking a word of English so ended up dishwashing. | Thoroughly enjoyed our conversations, he really is a lovely, honest, chatty, friendly bloke and a credit to the place. Don't forget that spooky YouTube video if you find it. . 5 stars plus all the way.

We attended a private party and had use of the charming sun trap of a courtyard garden

THIS is the one! Ye Spotted Dogge is #1 where you want to stay in Old Historic Portsmouth! PERFECT location, close to everything and SO apropos being in Old Portsmouth. Ian’s passion for history, design, architecture, hospitality and royalty are evident in every detail throughout the Inn. From the wooden beams dating to 1450, to the manually preserved 1500’s stencils on wall panels, to the original etchings and collectibles including the ACTUAL weapon used to assassinate the Duke of Buckingham in 1628 in this famous Inn, to the authentic English garden and tea room, every detail has been painstakingly maintained to perfection. Our bed and all linens were exquisite. The pillows and duvet were literally the most plush ever (I asked if I could buy them). After a day of exploring the beauty of Portsmouth, I highly recommend you have a seat in their precious private pub and enjoy a drink with Ian, Alex and their friends. Take in the endless fascinating stories they have to share. Every object has a story! In the morning, enjoy your tea and breakfast in the garden. It’s pure English enchantment at its finest! Look no further! With only 6 unique suites, book FAST! You can thank me later! Oh and… Needless to say, the Inn is immaculately clean, safe and secure. You are a member of the Royal family as a guest at Ye Spotted Dogge. ||Ian also arranged for a chauffeur to take us to Heathrow at the end of our trip. But he customized it to include stopping to visit the historically rich Salisbury Cathedral (800 years old) AND the magical Stonehenge! Without Ian, we would have missed these incredible sites! Not one negative to mention. Our stay at Ye Spotted Dogge was literal PERFECTION!

Wow wow wow - we had the most fabulous time. The hotel is absolutely stunning and the decor is a delight with so many beautiful things to admire. The property is steeped in history with many stories to tell.||Ian was such a warm and friendly host - we were taken care of as soon as we walked through the door. Nothing was too much trouble and we were both made to feel very special. We went to the gorgeous bar for pre-dinner drinks. Ian shared the history of the property and showed us the dagger that had killed Buckingham. Ian's passion for the property and the history was very clear. ||The room was beautiful adorned with wonderful pictures, furniture and a large bath tub in the bedroom. It was beautifully clean with a full mini bar and china cups and biscuits. Everything had a special touch just stunning.||Breakfast was outstanding. Everything was served on beautiful china in the dining room. The selection of food was fabulous - smoked salmon, cheese, ham, beautiful fresh bread and fruit - it really was 5** ||The location was within walking distance of all attractions.||Perfect stay - can't wait to return.
