My son and I had a night away just the two of us for some quality time together. It was just what we needed. Amazing location, excellent friendly staff, spacious room that was nice and warm when we arrived. We enjoyed a lovely little evening walk from the hostel, the suggested routes in the lobby were perfect and we followed one and loved it. Bike storage was useful, and perfectly located for as ride along the Monsal Trail the following day ☺️ will be back with the rest of the family soon!

Beautiful old character building and grounds. Very friendly and welcoming staff. The location is perfect for country walks including (David) Bellamy Bank and Monsal Trail. 15 minutes to pub but a good range for sale at reception. Highly recommended.

First and foremost this is a Youth Hostel so don’t expect anyone to carry your bags up to your room!
It’s very quiet and quite secluded, which is great for a break from busy life.
The kitchen is small, but was perfectly adequate on our visit. The staff as in most YHA hostels were very friendly and helpful.
We plan to return and make use of the available cycle storage and cycle the Monsal Trail.
There is limited food and drink available at reception, but the breakfast is the usual full offering.
Note that you can access the Monsail Trail on foot from this hostel, but you would have to carry your bike most of the way, down and back up a ravine!!

A lovely old building in good repair and situated in a beautiful part of the Peak District. Monsal Trail and other walks within very easy reach, wonderful river walk just 5 minutes away at the lower end of the property through the wood. As with most old buildings, there's little sound insulation but, even with a party of kids staying, it wasn't as bad as some YHA hostels that I've stayed at. Ensuite room for one was adequate, shower pressure was ok and the room was clean and tidy. Staff were friendly and helpful, lots of leaflets around to read. I never eat YHA food, it's generally over-expensive for what it is (Chester Trafford being the exception, they were very good). Beltonville Farm shop and campsite was only a five minute walk away, open from 0900 to 1700 most days, later at weekends. Food there was very fresh and very tasty. Public transport was ok, one slow bus into Buxton early in the morning (65A) on weekdays and then faster but infrequest buses (65) in the weekday; Saturday and Sunday buses were about 0830/0840. Always check with Google Maps. Connection times for onward travel by bus varied from 50 minutes at Blackwell Turn for Bakewell and beyond, 5 minutes towards Tideswell and Sheffield. I largely found it easier to go straight into Buxton on the early bus, have a breakfast or breakfast bap and then jump a further bus at about 0920/0930. If you want to visit Chatsworth House, there's one direct bus on Sunday (about 1130) from Buxton and then one coming back (after 1500). Only one real issue during the stay: whoever brought in the yappy dog that barked CONSTANTLY from 0730 to almost 0900 on the Monday, leave it at home in future.

Hired the whole place out in Nov 24 for a family get together, fantastic place, fantastic scenery, couldn't have asked for anything better.......however a bit of heat from the sun would have been nice!

If the rooms and showers weren't so tired, it would be 5 *. Because the staff was really nice, friendly and ready to help with anything, nothing was any issue for them. We had dinner and breakfast and both were great for the money. If we are in the area again, we would definitely consider staying in YHA Ravenstor.

This hostel has its own licence so you can't drink your own alcohol.

The bunkbeds were metal and very noisy.

The heating is on all through summer and makes it uncomfortably hot

The kitchen is not very big and organised really badly so if there's more than three people in it at a time there's no room to move around!

The breakfast was well stocked which is my only positive thing to say

Positives: Great location and friendly staff.|Negatives: Needs decorating and/or refurbishing as all a bit shabby. Breakfast was very disappointing really for the price. The worst thing however was the constant noise of a generator/extractor fan that was very loud and on all night , got very little sleep. Probably not go again. The quality of the YHA’s at least in the Peak district is pretty poor at the moment. I hope they manage to turn things around as they used to be very good.
