The Spa at The Grand York - York

The Spa is located in the “vaults.” As a hotel guest you have to schedule a time with the front desk and bookings are made on the hour. Once you arrive you give your name and sign in, you are handed a towel and that’s it. No one tells you what is available or where anything is located. Once you go thru to get to the pool area the floor was very wet and I think they should do a better job at maintaining the floor. The whirlpool jets are in an automatic timer so the jets are on for 15 minutes then off for 15 minutes. You can’t control them. The water wasn’t hot enough and the chlorine was intense. We were able to find the steam room and dry sauna. It’s just very dangerous walking around. There is a water cooler and cups but the water is at room temperature and not cooled.

I have had two facials with Sangay and it was the best thing that happened to my face. Sangay has magic hands and she knows where to press, had a great head and neck massage. The face looks lifted and the completion is smooth after Sangay's treatment.
I really hope she stays long at the Grand.

Booked for mine and my sister's birthday a half spa day with a half hour work it out massage. Not really the 5 star experience I was hoping for. The relaxation room lounger throws were dirty, you could feel the dirt on them and the room was full of dust - no attention to detail from the cleaners at all.

On entrance to the treatment room, it was like an iceberg as the air con had been left on possibly overnight as I had the first treatment of the day so I was offered an extra blanket but it was still very cold. There was a sewage smell from the shower in the room and the treatment bed didn't feel clean like the ones in the relaxation room. The therapists phone went off which she excuses but I felt like there was a lot of faffing in and out of cupboards getting oils etc, didn't feel very organised but the massage itself was ok and I did feel relaxed eventually.

The pool was lovely but not very clean, there was a black scum around the pool edge. The jacuzzi was nice, as was the steam room but the sauna felt far too hot, we wouldn't sit down at all which is very unusual.

As for the showers, again no attention to detail with the cleaning, lots of hair in the drain, limescale build up and the hair dryer filters have never been cleaned.

Overall not an awful experience but just not the 5 star treatment I was expecting.

I was really looking forward to a relaxing, five-star spa day, but unfortunately, it fell far short of my expectations. My friend and I booked the same package, yet our treatments were completely different. Mine felt rushed and unpolished, almost as if the therapist wasn’t familiar with it. The entire experience lacked organisation, and there was little guidance from the staff, leaving us to figure things out on our own. To make matters worse, ongoing building work made it difficult to fully relax.

After reaching out to express my concerns, I was offered a complimentary visit. However, it didn’t come close to matching the value of what we originally paid, especially considering the effort and cost of travelling from Sheffield. Despite following up, I never received a response. Given the price and reputation, I expected far better service and communication. I wouldn't recommend this spa.

Today I have been for a manicure experience. The lady who doing my manicure was a lovely person, but the whole experience is not so good and not meet with its price.

The first of all, it was a small table close to door, there is no privacy. Everyone who going to changing room watched and it doesn’t feel right to be honest for the five stars hotel. Moreover, there wasn’t so many choice for nailpolish colour.

After manicure, my nails doesn’t look like that weren’t done manicure. Overall, the only good thing a lady whose doing my manicure was a lovely lady.

I have been to The Grand on multiple occasions and it has always been exceptional. I was bought a voucher as part of my maternity gift from my work colleague.

This experience was far from the usual high standards of The Grand.

I was picked up at 14:05 (I was booked for 14:00 )for my treatment. The therapist asked me if there was a special occasion for visiting the spa today. Before I could even answer she moved on to the pre assessment questions. If she had listened she would have realised I was recently postpartum ( pretty important information when delivering treatments ).

I had a massage, facial and scalp rub, during the treatment, cupboard doors were being opened and closed ( making loud banging sounds during the treatment). The therapist was also using a chair which is absolutely fine when doing a facial ect , but all I could hear was the wheels spinning around the room. This wasn’t very relaxing at all.

The treatment package was meant to be 55 mins. By the time I had got dressed and back to the locker room to check my phone it was 14:45. So in total I had about 30mins. Very disappointing experience.

Went to get dressed to go home and there was a swimming costume sanitary stick folded around the clothes hooks in the shower room ( pretty disgusting).

There was a member of staff straightening her hair at the hair drying station. She did say I could use the chair next to her as she would be a long time as she had very long hair. Is this normal to allow staff to use the facility? I felt like I didn’t have much room and I was in her way when I was drying my hair.

All in all, I wouldn’t want to visit this area of The Grand again, it fell below their normal standards.

My partner treated me to a deep tissue massage at The Spa after our lovely stay in the hotel, and it did not disappoint.

My massage therapist Miranda knew exactly what pressure I needed in the right places, especially where I had tension in my shoulders. She is very good at what she does and was very professional! I highly recommend to ask for her if you ever book a treatment there.
